Remember when you couldn’t give a petrol BX away?

Post by jamescarruthers »

I am quite surprised at the price that this has been bid up to. When I saw it I had a good think about maybe taking it on as a little project for about £100.

Of course the bidding may be fraudulent.

Alternatively, there are lots of chancing “classic car dealers” who think they can flip stuff like this after doing about 5 minutes of research on the models.

I do hope I am wrong and that it gets a loving home with an enthusiast rather than just doing the rounds of fake bidding and awful write ups before getting scrapped.

This one's been around for a while, a bit optimistic I think

Funnily enough a petrol would be my first choice if I were to have another one!

I thi nk the days of the £100 bx are gone unless you're very lucky, seems £500 is very achievable for most "modern classics" regardless of make, colour, trim etc and with prices appreciating as they are, an investment for some even if you do nothing with it for 10 years.

Yep years ago I picked up a few free or scrap money BX's, that the owners didn't want going to the crusher. A 16 Mk2 was worthless, again they have all gone now as have most modern classics that aren't a GTI/Turbo etc1

I've had the TZI 11 years, that was £250 and the GT was free but damaged!

Yes indeed Tim think I paid £100 for my red tzdt in 2005 and no more than £200 for any bx I've bought, the cheapest being the 16rs estate in 1997 for £50,not had a free one tho.

I paid €990 for the 19D Millesime (from Marseille) last October. It had been up for €1400 for a month or so a week earlier.
BX prices in France (on the Leboncoin site) varied between 'free to collect' and €2800. Even some non-GTi were at the upper end.

A browse is interesting:
https://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/offres
Just select Marque > Modèle > etc
then Affichez filtres
and Rechercher to display them.

I don't know the numbers of how many were sold on the UK market but I suspect the survivor rate is less than 1% this will lift prices on barn finds and the like, that's what the oily rag brigade want now.
At last count on howmanyleft there were around 250 bx's still UK registered. That's makes quite a rarity, when did you last see one?

£581 is the final price.

Shall we wait for it to be relisted and sold again or am I just an old cynic?

If it's as rust-free as the description makes out, I reckon with a year's MoT and a bit of a tarting up cosmetically, that could fetch £1250ish.

We shall see

Yeah it will definitely sell well. It’s just sad that these go to get flipped rather than loved. But hey-ho that’s the modern classic world we live in with BXs now. It’s quite a shift from how it used to be!

True! But better flipped than scrapped - and the purchaser at the more premium price will presumably cherish it more as a result (one would hope)

There's probably another 75 or so laying around that dropped off and are untaxed...the place at Whitlesey had over 25 in one place, they do show up

I wouldn't be surprised if next time I went there the site has been cleared as Alan was not in good health last time we saw him, and that was two years ago.
