Nicely staged improvements, which show the cumulative effect of getting rid of those voltage drops.
A case of before...and after...and after...and after!
Well done in seeing all that through, and methodically.
She's looking good.

Added the heater cowel. Still need to weld a stud to the exhaust but this is good for now.

I'm having trouble starting the car from warm if I leave it for a few minutes, what could be the issue here?

Is that heated intake air needed in warm weather?
Apart from very cold weather (carb icing etc to be avoided), most engines work best with cool, dense air - so pre-heating from a hot exhaust manifold wouldn't help.

Yes, the 14 has a little lever just visible at the right of that pic under the cable.

My hot starting issues with my old 14 turned out to be an ageing ignition module by the way. Not saying that’s the problem! But something to consider.

I replaced mine yesterday. Their placement being directly opposite to the thermostat housing is just award-winning for automotive stupidity.

The starting from hot was just the beginning. It cranks for ever when cold and puts up the same fight after you let it sit after 30 minutes or so.
Things I need to look at are:
  • The fuel bowl float position
  • The coil, as it's the original and is old
  • Potential vacuum leaks
What could be the cuplrit here? It's having trouble starting after it's been left for some time, and is putting up exactly the same fight when cold. Thoughts?

Oh, the intake is designed for this, there are notches in the air baffle (where the silver pipe connects to the intake) for above 25 degree weather, between 5-25 degree weather and below freezing. The reason why this is so is because of emissions control IIRC.

While on a Zoom meeting with some Autoshite members, the fault seems to be down to the wrong size ball valve and float in the float bowl not being able to admit enough fuel for the engine. I can certainly change over the valves from the old carb to the new one, but we'll see if the bowl in the new carb is any different to the old one, as this'll decide whether changing over the float is a viable option.

Float bowls were identical, valves and floats swapped over. Car starts up willingly when hot, cold and in between. Result.
I'm not calling it properly fixed, but it's getting there.

Carburettors! Last time I had the pleasures of them was at the very end of the last century. Since then, choice has been decidedly diesel. Not missing the HT and plugs, either. Or the vapour locking. Or the in-tank pumps. Or the mpg.
Hey, ho. :-"
