Post by deltic »

I'm very pleased to announce a new arrival, even more so having an ORGA number of 5328, making today its 30th birthday!

The new arrival is an identical twin to my current GTi auto making Sittingbourne a bit of a hotspot for them as I think I now have 15% of the 13 surviving GTi autos and the only two 1991 cars [according to How Many left?], making this one the youngest as the other car was 30 on 24 May. And our C4 was 15 earlier in the week.

It might be tempting fate to say that JHR drives very nicely, but it seems to. Initial jobs will be new wipers, working out why the indicators don't make a noise (relay?) and giving it a good clean. So far the only work done to it was to give it a vacuum out and remove the evidence left by some rodent BX enthusiast. And who also left behind a 2007 copy of the Leicester Mercury, doubtless to soak up water from the leaking sunroof! It also sits on a pretty newish set of Deestone Vincente tyres which seem to have appalling reviews, however for the sake of the environment I'm loathe to discard them immediately.

From new I think the car was from Wiltshire. In terms of history there's nothing until 1999 by which point it had done 36000 miles. Why on earth don't people keep their car's paperwork?! My other GTi has a stamped book for every service since new.

From 1999 to 2007 the mileage more than doubled to 79000 miles and the car seemed to be being very well looked after and had not one but two cam belts in this period.

For the next 10 years the car seemed to be off road most of the time at a classic car garage at Great Oxendon, Northamptonshire with mileage only increasing to 82000 miles. Then in 2017 it was sold via eBay to the previous owner who spent quite a lot recommissioning (another cam belt, too!) it as well having least the bumpers and roof re-sprayed. He only added another 2000 miles in 4 years.

I think largely the car has been reasonably well looked after and possibly garaged quite a bit. Nevertheless there is a bit of rust in some of the usual places which will need to be attended to. Not surprisingly for a 30 year old car I spot more rust, paintwork imperfections, scratches and dints every time I walk by it. This morning I noticed what could be new scratches from a cat's paw, although at the moment I'm not blaming our cat, Digby, who is a 6kg life support system for a huge set of claws and teeth!

Talking of imperfections, I've only just noticed from the first photo that the nearside of the bonnet stands proud of the wing!

Doubtless of little interest on here, but with the new BX I now have a lovely Hyundai Coupe for sale if anyone is interested: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-detail ... 6063527543

And at some point I will have to review the future of our other GTi...

She looks a good acquisition, looked after, and company for the twin.
Sittingbourne (which I used to visit regularly) certainly something of a BX hub now!

Good question Tim! Why do you need another "semi broken motor"?

I'm sure you understand the attachment to certain cars but I guess ultimately the "old" one will have to go, ideally as a project car. In extremis I could break it for parts but am reluctant to do so. Of course if I win the lottery...

Not being from Sittingbourne originally it is a slightly strange place and seems also to a hub for foreign artics. No idea what they are bringing in or taking away!

Slowly cleaning up the new arrival, although this post could be a case of "all that glitters is not gold..." Possibly has had a bit more paintwork than I'd initially thought. But what I really should have spotted prior to purchase is some corrosion in the offside sill and as per usual I couldn't resist picking and prodding with a resultant hole. Presumably the MOT tester would have spotted this and as it's away from any from any suspension mounting points, etc. it wouldn't have been a failure. For now it'll have to be patched, but unless you get on your hands and knees it'll be hard to see. Bit of a bummer though...

Less worried about corrosion is our cat Digby who is quite taken with the "old" GTi.

Bit of a two steps forward and one step backwards day, today. Managed to get both front fog lights working as well as the windscreen wipers spraying better.

Annoyingly a Ford Tourneo managed to reverse into the rear of my BX. Luckily the bumper did what it's meant to do and only really suffered paint damage whereas the Ford had two dints in the rear door, one from the bumper and the other from the exhaust..

And the car is now washed ready for the National!
