Fitting new front brake pads BX 1.4

MOT advisory to change the front pads....I have got the old ones off following the Haynes manual (I know..). I've been able to fit the new pads into the calipers but am struggling to get the locking plate in to hold everything secure. Neither the new plates nor the old will fit.

The car had sat for 10 years before I acquired it. Do I need to clean up the calipers? It looks as though rust and encrusted brake dusk is making this job difficult; would it be normal to have to hammer the locking plate into place?

Also, this seems to be made worse by the locking pins for the brake wear cables locating at the base of the pad (and onto the caliper).

Any advice please?

It's not something I have done for a couple of years but ideally the locking plates should go in reasonably easy or with a little tap at the most. The caliper is best fully cleaned where the pads sit (as is the plate)
Apply some copper grease to the areas that mate, pads and caliper.

As for the anti rattle pins, they just hold themselves in place with tension resting against the caliper at the bottom once seated, I think they are quite easily fitted even when all is in place with a bit of gentle manoeuvring.

When you approach it again, it should prove easier, it's not that hard but I can understand how you felt.

Thanks, plan is to clean up those parts on the caliper as best I can and fettle them until they fit, had no time today but will be on it for most of tomorrow.

I've had this before where the locking plates are really tight and have had to file the pads slightly to get them in.
But as Dave says they should go in reasonably easily providing everything is clean of rust and debris and that the plates aren't damaged. They only fit one way so don't force them or get at them with a large hammer.

Well, got it done today. It didn't take too long as I was able to use my mini drill to clean up the calipers and the old locking plates as it looked as though the new ones were both too big and the wrong shape. Photos attached (I've since re-routed the brake pad wires so they don't foul the handbrake mechanism). Next job is the rears which will be both discs and pads which I am sure will be fun, however, it is satisfying to get something done. Tested the car and the braking was fine.

Your just showing off with your brake wear indicators, the wiring for mine disintegrated many years ago,

Thanks, pleased with the result. Two of the brake wear indicators had long since departed this earth, the pads came with new ones so I put them on.

I've experienced problems with aftermarket plates too from a kit - fairly similar in dimensions, but oversized. As you've found, normally the old ones will clean up.
