A bit rattled...

Post by Philip Chidlow »

I have recently noticed a vibrating like rattle from somewhere either under the car or low down in front. It isn't always there, but manifests at 30mph/2000rpm itself when gently accelerating and occasionally under lower speed load and higher speed foot-down (overtaking). It's a tinny rattle and I think it's probably baffles in the exhaust... (?) But as I am ignorant of the internal construction of my GTi's exhaust, I can't be sure...

As it's an auto, my biggest worry is a cracked drive plate rattling. It happened on a previous GTi auto of mine and cost £200 to replace... Thing is with that previous problem, the rattle occurred on overrun (lift off) and never under load.

Any thoughts on diagnosing more accurately?

Sounds like the exhaust is resonating (baffles knackered). Might be worth a try starting it up and briefly holding a rag over the tale end pipe `hole` and listening for any untoward noises?

Just had a similar thing on the way back from the ccc rally on saturday mine was caused by the rear protector plate on the hub cooming loose and ratling but i did check all the heat shields above the exhaust as my old bx did that as they are only held on with plastic clips there are three one at the front one in the middle and one near the middle box check they havnt come loose and are rattling on the exhaust.

If the exhaust baffles are suspects in this - what part of the exhaust are they in? That is, which part of the exhaust do I replace?

If it is the baffles then the way to check is give the exhaust a good shake you may hear them rattling inside but it could be either the centre box or tail box as if yours has a cat they dont fall apart they just clog up and the car has absolutely no get up and go.

there is a chance that it could be the dividerplate in the downpipe from the manifold joint thats rattling! if your down pipe is the one with the seam down both sides then there is a chance that the divider has started to go through????
