What Halfruads Swear is the 'right one'.

So... to try and lighten the situation of being sold the wrong part by Halfords, I thought I'd take some pictures to see where 'the one you need' thermostat might fit in the BX...

Any other thoughts?

Ah, found it. That's exactly where it belongs. Just like everything else from Halfords.

You're close, but this one was too small... by about an half and inch, and looks fairly different to the one that came out...

Oh, you have the MAAHOOSIVE one? I didn't know they came in the BX's! Only ever sold em on 205's and 309's.

Don't know what that thermostat fits - but the 'Massive' one looks normal - except - well - very large. the one shown would seem to seal half way down its body.

The massive thermostat is used if you have an independant fuel filter by the LHM tank and the fuel heater at the back of the engine. Later engines have a normal size thermostat, plastic cover and a black plastic fuel filter and heater mounted over the thermostat.

Yeah, I've got the RotoDiesel big ol' coffee can filter between the LHM tank and the diesel pump... strangely, if you go into Eurocarparts in Bristol, their chart shows the massive thermostat as the only one for BX diesels... all of them, so I guess there are some people out there swearing blue murder at them for exactly the same reason.

I should have got all my spare parts in the French hypermarket that I got my new rad cap, air filter, 5 litres of LHM, 10 litres of Mobil 15/40 all for the grand sum of, er, I don't have a Euro key on my computer... anyway, it was about £43. Now that's a bargain by anyone's money.

Yeah I got it in the end... and had fun getting that massive circlip out too. It was jammed in with silt, old bits of gasket glue and the remains of the old rubber seal. I resorted to drilling the circlip holes out enough to get some heavy duty decking screws that I cut the points off of and screwed them in and apply locking pliers. Still wouldn't move. A few taps with a screwdriver and hammer loosened it, and it came out.

Went back in much more easily... so I now have the right thermostat, in a shiny clean housing, new gasket... works perfectly, no leaks, no overheating.

Spot on. Good job jobbed there. Not a single bodge in sight. Nice one for me!

Good Job Jobbed indeed. One of several contributory causes of a prematurely overheating BX, and possibly the very first thing to swap out as a matter of course.
