Do you know, on reflection I don't think I will move on from the BX for two reasons:

1) I can always supplement it with another car keeping the BX for fun.

2) As such an iconic car it has to move into the appreciated classic status eventually by others as well as us pioneer enthusiasts.

I don't think I will sell it though even if it does increase in value. :D

Ian, when you came visiting you saw my other car, get one of those, never mind the price, the poor fuel economy, its a blast & depreciation is extremely low, so overall cost will work out a lot cheaper than a diesel which costs the same. Have a look on minicherished.co.uk website, you can spec your car & probably find one. Thats were mine came from.

The "S" is the only one to bother with, the others are nice, but you dont want nice, you want blinking fantastic, otherwise whats the point....

Pop round & you can have a spin in mine......

Whatever I end up running, there are only two criteria.

Can I fix it myself.

If not,

Could I afford to throw it away.

Thats been my criteria too. One of the main reasons I sold the Xantia V6 was because of that.

Very nice it is too.

These new diesel engines are unbelieveable compared to the old tractor unit in mine.

The only consolation is that mines dead easy to work on....

ooh r meee booty (thats Norfolk Tractor speak), nowt wrong with tractor noise, darn site cheaper than modern direct injection common rail gubbins, but yes they are worlds apart when it comes to performance & refinement. However if u open up the engine bay, they sound like tractors, its just much better cabin insulation, so start stuffing soundproof deadening panels in bx, no more diesel chatter.....

Its nt just the noise but the rapid throttle response, low speed grunt and general driveability that distinguishes new diesels from old. I regularily drive a 1.7 DCI Corsa - lovely engine - rest of it - well.

Agreed, new diesel engines are as complicated as petrols, some even more so! If they play up its tow down to the dealer and plug it into the computer too see whats up, no home spannering anymore!

Recent scruffy diesel n/a estate - "The Red Shed" - is no longer mine.

I feel tempted by an XM from time to time - though the fixability factor is maybe less than a BX. But buy the right one without too many sillies installed and Ken's throwaway criteria are fulfilled.

An HDi-engined C5 estate could be a dandy load-lugger and I get the impression there could be cheap ones to be had, but the fixability factor took a plunge with the Xantia and nosedived a lot further with its replacement.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

I've often been tempted by an XM but everything seems to be unreliable, expensive and difficult to work on.

The 2.5 diesels have a terrible reliability reputation and they're rather coarse. The 2.1's seem to be much better although they seem to tear their way through autoboxes.

Unless you go for the V6 petrol, the 2.0's (CT Turbo, 16v & 8v) are pretty gutless.

I dont doubt they're hugely satisfying though when they're working properly.

I do like the XMs myself but too have heard stories of woe! Less complicated the better I think!

OK, what's about the simplest car you can own? It has to be reliable, practical, with some kudos/style (or retro charm), cheap-ish to run and generally available for under £1000...

My suggestion - to kick off with - would be...

...mmm, let me think :?
