Mechanic said that in summer it would be just about ok, but it would lose charge over time as the car draws loads of current just starting which would cause a huge drain on battery, so you would have to do quite a bit of mileage in a day just to keep the battery topped up. Apparently 1 glow plug draws 20amps.... in which case no wonder it died quickly.....

Just filled car up as i thought the guage was reading quite low, could only manage to put 50 litres in, so she still had 16 litres floating about. Managed about 450 miles on 50 litres which doesnt sound too bad, bearing in mind i havent been driving in economy mode (110 down M1) & booting it fairly regularly (cos i can) & driving to work & back in stop start traffic. I wonder what she will do at a steady 70 on motorway long distance, what consumption does everyone else tend to get??

Fuel gauges.

Post by Geoffrey Gould »

Hello Fuel gauges on BX's or at least all the ones my son and I have had have been inacurate to say the least, anything below 1/2 a tank on the gauge and it's pot luck as regards how much is in the tank. Take care mate it's easy to run out. As soon as mine gets to 1/2 then I fill up.
Cheers.

I agree with Geoff, although I've gone 30 miles after the warning light comes on and still been ok. In theory you should have a gallon/5 litres in the tank once the light stays on.

I used to get 49mpg until I changed to a Bosch pump and now I get around 45. It doesn't seem to matter what I do to the thing - its always about 45. All in all - not bad!

Around 56mph (90kph) is in theory the most economic speed to drive at. I've tried for a bit but just get bored

Hi Tim, car seems to running fine. Is there anyway to actually make the fuel guage more accurate?

Trouble is Geoff that you cant get much distance if you fill up everytime the guage says its half full, i tend to run mine low all the time, never experienced any problems to date, the lowest i had was 4 litres in the Mini....

BX Bandit, trouble is unless the light comes on you dont know if the low warning indicator actually works.....

I`ve never owned a BX yet with an accurate guage below about 1/2 or 1/4 tank. I can also report I`ve done considerably more than 30 odd miles with the fuel light on.
I ran a couple of my BX`s out quite a few times-in fact the first estate would do it a few times a month but it never bothered me as I carried a can of diesel and it always started again.
Incidentally I always ran it low on juice as I was planning to take it off the road but it lasted much longer than I thought it would!

Fuel gauge.

Post by Geoffrey Gould »

Hello MULLEY well I guess Ive never been brave enought to find out just how far is enough, the red light has never ever come on and at about 250/300 the gauge is on empty. The other thing is that running down low has a couple of issues, one being that a 15 year old tank is going to have a degree of water, dirt and 'fungi' in the bottom and that is where I would prefer it to stay. Diesel can be pretty 'dirty'. Keeping the tank full cuts down on condensation as well.
Plus I am a lazy old sod and running out isnt part of the plan, too much trouble.
Cheers.

Simple answer - fill tank full - run for 300 miles, re-fil tank then calculate fuel consumption.

If fuel consumption is 40 MPG - say (Turbo diesel, GTi etc) tank is 14.4 gallons - 14.4 x 40 = 576 - so how good is my nerve?

I used to run my TD to 400 miles locally then fill up. On holiday it might go to 525 or 550 if the gauge didn't look bad and the light wasn't on.

My own feeling is that the warning light comes on for long periods with about 1.5 gallons left. I've always wondered if the last bit was really accessible with the second tank or could the fuel run away from the pickup on a hill.

Got another good use for the trim mileometer?

Guess what, my trip is bust, but a new speedo head is winging its way to me, so hopefully i can judge how much fuel i have, at the mo i am writing down the mileage & then getting wifey to check it.

So 450 miles on 50 litres, leaves 16 litres, so another 140 miles left if consumption stays the same, not taking into account whats in the fuel lines, another 5 litres (the last bit i am joking).

Every car i've owned i have always had the low fuel light on, even the Gti, no ill effects by doing that & always had about 10 litres left even after doing 40 miles with the light on.

I have to do it on the mini, as fuel economy is so poor, i would be filling it up all the time......

Can the inside of the tank be cleaned out? or does it have to be physically removed to be cleaned?

You can gain access to the tank through the two holes thoughtfully provided under the back seat. There are 2 plastic clips covering the gauge unit and the fuel pipes - which can be removed and you can get your arm in. If its a petrol car its not a good idea to smoke at the same time.
