I'd rather have an XM estate than car {despite looking a bit like an overgrown ZX estate from the back} but to change from a BX estate? no chance.

Hmm.

Thanks for opinions. Tom's is pretty unambiguous, and I respect his knowledge. If I bought one, it would be the manual TD saloon, Mk1 on the basis that they are sorted, or MkII on the basis that they were better.

There is no rational justification for it in terms of use or mileage though. It would be indulging my "wants" rather than my "needs", and probably wouldn't make me feel any more fulfilled or a better person.

Getting rid of Swampy would be a hell of a wrench too. There's little chance of a sale, and scrapping doesn't bear thinking about. We certainly can't have two cars.

I guess I shall just carry on dreaming.....

Congratulations Oscar - a wise, if totally unadventurous, decision ! Just like the ones I make these days.

Gimme gimme gimme

It's not an easy decision...why not wait till one comes up and take a test drive...that way it may help you decide

This guy used to a few in all the time but within the last 9 - 12 months he's had very few. We got our Xantia from him

These guys seem to have a very low stock turnover..possibly because they are stupidly expensive

And one more..

Seem to fewer on all sites these days....

understand all the electrics are controlled not by normal wire and switched but addressed by a pseudo computer bus. That should give hours of amusement to fix when the gremlins get in.
That's not true - certainly not of Mark 1s as bus-electrics came in on Citroen a weeny bit later than 1989. The Mk 1s perhaps present an equal challenge but for different electrical reasons. Chopping out all the earths and replacing them with conventional ones should resolve the problem - and has probably already been mentioned. I'd consider an XM if a runner BX, drive-space and flexible insurance were available to cover potential down-time on the XM. Diesels only, though.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

What about this no reserve example? Needs TLC and a bit of help from a body shop and some elbow grease, but struck me as an excellent description of what appears to be an honest car...

Personally I think go for it. A quirky, possibly tempramental relationship - but hey, some of us even get married!

Big, not that quick, uneconomical & if anything goes wrong you will need the support of your lottery winning friend. On the other hand, ignore all of this & go for it..... just avoid the auto's

My XM is an early series one 2.1td estate which I've had just over two years now, the only thing that's gone wrong was the LHM pump leaked and had to be replaced.
I did go through it very thoroughly before I put it on the road, I had to, I only gave £150 for it as a kit of parts. but it's been great.

My mate has just bought a series 2 2.1 td and says it's awesome, best car he's ever had, having driven it, I'd have to agree, and it only cost him £350.

The auto boxes are much nicer IMHO but do seem to fail without warning.

Go take a look, they all seem to have the same faults, sunroof failure and electric window failure, easy fixes if you can get the parts at the right price. But suberb drive and ride quality when you've done, plus the economy of the diesels. I reckon this ones cost me not much more to run than the BX.

I wouldn't go for the petrol one, but then again, I wouldn't, would I.
They think it's all over, it is now!
