My first diesel BX!

Post by Philip Chidlow »

I just picked up Ken's silver TXD estate. It performed well on the 218 mile trip and although I took it easy to start with I soon found myself cruising happily at 80-ish most of the way - and although there was a bit of traffic at the end of the journey which slowed me down it only took about three and a half hours. And I got 51+mpg out of her. I am very happy.

Hope the weather's nice tomorrow so I can give her a wash and brush up.

Thanks Ken.

(Ken - PM me those details - don't forget! )

That's a stonking good car Philip. You've done well to get it because I could tell at a glance that it is one of the better examples. Enjoy. Once you get used to the fact that it isn't as fast as it is useful, you will find that it becomes a way of life. I've been threatening to part with mine for nearly a year but in the end just gave up. It just seems to like it around here.

What he said!

Philip, I`ve not even seen the car in the flesh but trust me if you`ve had it off Ken it will be spot on.
Nice to see that another good quality BX has gone to a great home.

After all the sh1te (excuse my french) cars that we post up in the spotters corner off ebay and various other websites it makes a really refreshing change to see well sorted cars for sale.

Phil, you're gonna struggle to go back now mate. I'm getting 52mpg average out of my TZD and its great. Running something that does 30mpg now hurts my wallet big time.

Congrats on the car. For me the real deal with the diesels (and not just the economy) is the unlaboured long leggedness of the way they can be driven. When you first get one and start driving it around your own 'patch' as it were you soon find out that whereas you would normally take a r/bout in 2nd.... now thats too low a gear and 3rd is perfectly adequate with good drive in that gear out of it as well. Many other examples of this; too many to mention here. Enjoy, and if its the same in Essex as it is here then its a nice day.

I do prefer diesels are the XUD engine especially in non turbo form is so simple. Ive owned quite a few over the years and not one ever given any trouble, wish I could say the same for petrol Citroens!

I never had any bother with my Motronic GTi 8v's. The Jetronic (earlier GTi 8v's) one i had was a pain in the ar5e.

The Motronic in the 16v is a totally different animal. They can be troublesome.

The 8V motronic is almost completely self sufficient and just requires the idle levels setting and it does everything else for you. Its the best fuel injection system in the world :) The only problem you'll ever have is with dirt on the sensors (keep em clean!) and the ignition modules pack up (carry a spare!)

The diesels are pure class! I've not driven a non turbo diesel but the turbo is everything you could ever ask from a car.

They are good arent they these TD things!! 52mpg, u must have a nice light foot, i'm only getting 45, mind u thats going a fair bit faster than the speed limit (only on occasions though). Havent had the chance to do a decent long run yet to see how good the economy is, but any car is bound to be better than my mini, it only does 250-300 on 50 litres, ouch!!
