16 TXS blues...

Post by Doz »

Happy new year to all...

Well, the TXS is giving me jip, oh the joys of carburation...

Symptoms, all intermittant of course :?

Won't tick over...
Won't start after making a small journey (say 5 mins to the shops !) Smells of fuel. Leave for 20 mins , and it's on the button. The Fuel pump looks a little "sweaty" in my opinion ...

Fuel filter is new, and when I bought the car I changed everything to do with the sparks (cap, arm, leads and plugs)

Carb off time ??

Sounds like it to me, my old 16TZS would be a pig to start when warm, as did the 16TRS too, maybe worth rebuilding it. Fine when cold and when it was actually running, used to overfuel, maybe worth trying to get a manual choke conversion too.

Won't start after a short journey. Does that mean that it will start ok after a long one? Could be a choke fault which might well be fixable without pulling the whole carb off and apart. A bit of thinking about the symptom pattern and a little study of Haynes to see how it works (which you'll have to do anyway), might save you time and grief.

Mine was awkward after a short journey, when warm i had to depress the throttle all the way and it would go, when it was cold I didnt touch it.

Yours Tim was evaporating the fuel in its float chamber then.

This sounds suspiciously like the float valve isn't closing properly, and the carb is overfilling and leaking all over the place.

After you switch off the engine the carb is draining it's excess into the engine and completely flooding it. Give it 20 mins and all the excess fuel has evaporated, and hence it will start again.

That's only one possibility that fits the symptoms, but is exactly what was happening on a carburettored engine to me many years ago.

I don't have specific experience of your carb, but looking at the Haynes BOL, it looks almost identical to ones I've pulled apart in the past, and they're actually very easy to open the float chamber and clean out / blow out the jets and all the drillings.
this might be a signature

I find stripping carbs apart quite theraputic, so the job doesn't seem to off putting ... I also have the use of an ultrasonic cleaning bath here at work, so it might get a dunk in there .. worked a treat on my kawasaki carbs a year or so ago.
Thanks for all the advise guys.

No probs, a manual choke may be a good idea though?

Well what a time that was ...

damaged the carb gasket getting it apart ... rang round all the usual places ... about £32 for the "kit" and 3 weeks wait ...

thankfully a trip to fine purveyor of motor part "Harry Buckland" ... there was a J-plate 16 which provided a donor carb ....

... on to part 2, the rear exhaust hanger ... well after that had been cleaned up , I had a nice hole about 20 cms long by about 15 wide :(

duly welded and painted and painted and painted.....

also threw the oil out... it stank of petrol after the overfueling

Happy days ....

hi there,
if i was you i would just maybe go with replacing the carb. i had probs with my 1.4 that turned out to be the the little jet in the carb that sprays the fuel was partialy blocked or damaged some how as it was spraying the fuel down the side of the cylinder air intake bit. made it a bitch to start as i was waiting for the fuel to run down the side of the cylinder and down the manifold. no real way to repair that prob so i replaced the carb and put new seals in the re'con before fitting. also something i read in my ex 1.6 manual is that when cold your not supposed to give it any throttle but when hot youre supposed to give it full whack.its in the owners book under starting your car i think. would go with popping the filter off and looking in the carb while someone is turning it over to check the jet.

cheers rossco :D
