spammers

Post by tom »

We seem to be getting a lot of these. Rather than posting a clever put down, let us adopt the following procedure: PM the moderator with the username and "Spammer" then post underneath the spammer's posting "Moderator informed". This saves the mod being deluged with our spam and treats the spammer with due contempt.

I have now started blocking IP addresses (all bloody American so far) of any spammers I come across before deleting their posts - can I please ask everyone not to clivk on any of their links as they may be (read are) viral.

Club-XM adopts a similar tactic, where as all new members have a validation period and then have to post themselves on an introduction thread before they can post on the main boards.

Proven system. Its common place on a couple of other forums I'm regularly on.

There's been a recent massive increase in spammers on all forums.
At one stage, I was deleting close to 50+ a day on average on forums where I had the rights to do it, but on the brighter side, one who was a real PITA I managed to get a line on, reported him to a task force over here which was doing an investigation worldwide on child pormography and he suddenly disappeared and there was a news item that they had caught one overseas, so hopefully I helped nail that one.
Unfortunately, IP bans don't work as these tossers use proxys so every time they come back it's using another IP#, and banned e-mail addresses don't work due to these forums accepting anything as an e-mail address, so if they just radomly hit the keyboard like this: "hwsuwuzxd" it becomes a computer generated name @hwsuwuzxd.com and they're in. The biggest risk with bans is that in the process, you can end up banning a legit member as I have done on a couple of occasions   but most are aware of the problem and just drop you an e-mail advising if they have problems.
I found on a couple of forums, that word substitutions work well as it takes all the incentive out of posting for one thing, if something totally different comes up. For instance, if they post "porn" and "I am a low life time wasting spammer" comes up it kinda loses it's appeal and if you change the URL the links don't work. Their e-mail addresses are also good sport with changes including "ripoff central.com" "deadbeat druggies.com" looking quite amusing when they come on. It's even better sport if you then lock the thread and delete their membership as they then can't get in to either delete it or correct it, they just have to wear it. It took a lot of time, but eventually I think we've frustrated them as much as they've frustrated everyone else, but the best of the lot is the option I've instigated on CitroenZ and FCF whereby they have to be manually activated as a user. Unfortunately, it is time consuming and something we really shouldn't have to do.
My greatest worry with these clowns is that they seem to be constantly trying to get members details with one of them eventually posting that "if you just give us your database, we'll leave you alone."
The word censor deleted my response as apparently you're not supposed to tell 'em to "get f*****d!!!" in no uncertain manner. [-X !!!---)))

I run a commercial virus scanner and firewall as I have a son in the industry, but I also run "Ad aware" through at least once a week also as I reckon some of these losers would love to get into my system and cause havoc as I must have cost them hours upon hours in the past few months with all the booby traps I've set fro them.
Seem to be really thinning out of late, unless of course, they're all away in the Bahamas at their Villas for the Christmas break. titanic !!!---)))

I`m told that if you post your e-mail address on a forum some scammers sort of glide over forums and pick these (e-mail addresses) up without trying.
Therefore any passing scambuckets please feel free to pick this one up...

debbieonlineagent@yahoo.co.uk <debbieonlineagent@yahoo.co.uk>

In case anyone missed that I said debbieonlineagent@yahoo.co.uk <debbieonlineagent@yahoo.co.uk>

I really hope the spamming old slut gets bombarded now. Won the lottery my arse.

*Goes without saying none of us nromal people should e-mail that address.

Yahoo have a good system to get rid of spam on e-mails which is why I use that one on most of the forums I'm on.
If I get one e-mail that is spam, I click "spam" at the top of the page and it will reject all mail from that source in the future.
My other accounts were getting choked with it, but since I went Yahoo for my e-mail, I get practically nothing, so she won't have too many worries via her Yahoo account.
