I feel dirty, but strangely excited....

Post by Oscar »

Picture the scene:

6am Sunday morning, and Oscar is herding a sleepy SWMBO and Mother-in-law to the car for the dash to the airport (Hurrah!).

I've got everyone in the car, with great patience ("Irina, open the boot and put your bag in. Now go and sit in the back").

Key in, glowlights off, turn key, vague clunk. Nothing else. Try again. Same result. Trying a third time would be stupid, so I dashed inside, got the multimeter out and checked the battery - fully charged.

Starter motor stuffed.

Woke the neighbour up and asked to borrow his car.

Herded a panicky MiL and SWMBO into the new car ("Open the boot etc. etc....)

Locked house keys in car and car keys in house, damn, never mind, let's get going.

And so we're off, in a 2.5l V6 Ford Mondeo.

Bloody hell it is fast, and thirsty.

We sped down the M-way at 95 all the way, with loads left in reserve. So quiet that we could hear the MiL's blood pressure returning to normal. On the way back I hunted a couple of BMWs.

It was a delight to drive - fast, well-behaved, quiet and comfortable.

But yet, but yet - no charisma. Dry suspension. No involvement. Little excitement or thrill.

After filling it up before handing it back, I realised that I wouldn't want one for a long-term relationship, but it was a very satisfying cheap thrill on the side.

Now I have to endure Mondeo Man's comments about French cars.

...and if you want a Ford that's both fast *and* fun (although considerably less refined than a Mondeo, I have to admit), I'll come and take you for a spin in the Capri. :D

I hate (new) fords.

You should have burnt it before you got home and told him it was in an incident of some sort.

I think you're best off having a go in a 16v then. They're quicker than a Mondeo V6 (not by much, but noticably), yet have character :)

Your description of the experience reminded me of this I read a few years ago. If your sense of humour isn't as odd as mine, just find the bit about a DS and a Senator:

I know what you mean, i think its a big fwd ford thing, My Xr2 was fun, my slow S***** can be a bit fun, i'm just hoping i dont get spoiled by citroens by the time the V8 S***** finished, cos i'm expecting that top be a lot of fun! :P

Never fancied a Mondeo except for cheap reliable commute mobile.
The O/H is sick of hearing about BX's! :( And aparently Xantias are 'Didsbury cars' LOLZ

My limited experiences of the V6 24V Mundano aren`t good. I`ve seen so many smokey/rattly/badly running examples I wouldnt want one to keep or even flog on.
I`m sure when they`re running right and well treated they`re a pretty good car (if that`s your bag) but certainly not for me.
Ordinary `run of the mill` Mundanos are suprisingly nice and easy to drive though and I`d have no problems with one as a daily user.

The current Mondy is Fords best car to date for driveability imho, absolutely superb handling, the 130 tdci is as fast as the 2.5 v6 {midrange} and the ST220 {3L V6} is very capable.

That's fooking hilarious... just started exploring the other columns in that series, however since I'm at work in an open office, I'll have to stop before I explode trying not to laugh out loud :D
