Fairly epic BX journey.

Post by DavidRutherford »

Yesterday, I drove the furthest I've ever driven in a day before, and it was in my BX. (DTR turbo)

Previously, it was a bit over 500 miles.. probably about 530ish. Yesterday: 720, and for about 360 of them, I was towing another car on my A-frame.

It was to collect a fiat uno turbo which is to be an engine donor for my X1/9. Only problem was it was in northumberland. Usually, I would want to use a bigger heavier vehicle for towing, but the BX is the only thing I have that's roadworthy at the moment to do such a job.

360 miles there, at fairly high speeds. Load up the fiat, and then 360 miles back. Used a total of 77 litres of fuel, so that's an average of 42.5mpg. Considering the speed I was driving up there at, and the fact that I was towing another car on the way back, that's fairly impressive.

Even more impressive when you consider that the car is 18 years old, and cost £60 with tax and ticket.

One conclusion though... the BX hatchback is not a brilliant towing vehicle. There's simply not enough weight on the back axle to prevent the trailer from pushing the BX around.

Thats some journey, hope the engine and bits make it worth the while. At least (judging by the weather round here) you had a nice day for it.

Nope not one, drove perfectly! Only thing was i was nodding off as its so comfy and after a hearty lunch I could have got in the back for a kip.

Actually only problem was that the antique radio is LM/MW and only picks up sports or indian stations, and as I dont have much interest in either I turned it off and sat listening for untoward noises. :D There werernt any.

Think the furthest I drove my BX16 TRS Auto was from Plymouth (I lived there) to my wifes Parents place in the southern Pyrennes near Caucasane (excuse spelling) via Portsmouth Ferry. Took us 3 days because of a late ferry and not wanting to drive in the dark on Foreign roads. Return Trip was done in 2 days.

Declared that my best BX below mileage for a F plate, fitted it with GTI interior and believe it or not earned respect form the Frenchies who saw it. Wanted to bring it to NZ but it would have failed the Front Impact Regualtions so ended up giving it away.

Suppose I could export my BX to Australia and see how far I could go in a day :?
