The number of BX's on the road

Post by MULLEY »

Just read the latest copy of Auto Express mag & according to them a total of 219263 were sold in the UK between 1983-1993 (i thought there were a few 1994 one's sold?), anyway, 94% of this figure have now been scrapped. This leaves a grand total of 14653.

Now before anyone asks, i cant validate their figures so dont know if this includes SORN's or not etc etc....

This car is getting rarer & rarer every year, ebay is frequently showing cars for sale that are being butchered or are destined for scrap, wont be too many years before the numbers really start whittling down.

Bit of a shame, but i guess every car has had its day, so 10 years from now how many will be left? & how many of us will be driving one?? they might be too expensive by then (better start stockpiling now).

I was at my local independent Cit. specialists garage* last week ..........the place was full of Xantias [at least a dozen] several XM's,two ZX's,a CX 2.5turbo and even an SM [plus the remains of a another SM] .....my BX was the only one there....maybe I called in on a bad day.
*Magpie Service Station,Brinsworth,Rotherham ...........if the mods dont mind me giving him a "plug" ..........he's always done me a good job on my ol' BX.

Up till yesterday I hadn't seen a Bx of any description for months, and I drive 400 miles ish every week in mine with my work albeit in a rural area, but hey presto saw a 'D' registered car yesterday and another 'K' reg one today, in the last three years the numbers seem to have dwindled dramatically.

I wonder how other cars fare, the ones that finished production in 93/94 , there seems to be a large number of 205's that still remain.

I was the same yesterday with this D reg Bx that came towards me, to wave like a loon or not, but like you refrained from doing so! Maybe will consider doing so in a couple of years as they will be as rare as hens' teeth by then.

Trouble is that everytime i have seen someone driving a BX, they dont look the type to even notice that i'm driving one as well, plus the look on the faces of those that i have waived at is something like:

"oh hi, eh? who the fxxk r u?"

It does make me laugh, i dont think i'm a sick person :P

You could always try flashing your lights.

This used to happen all the time with the CX's

I advertised my trailer tent in the 2CVGB mag this month,a member of 2CVGB phoned me to come and take a look at it today,he lives less than 5 miles away from me,he has a 2CV & a Dyane [both of which I'd never seen] .....I'd never met the guy at any 2CVGB meetings ........he turned up to look the trailer over .....in a BX

I gave the club a mention .......but he said the only time he uses the 'net was when he went to his bro' in laws house ...........it was a tidy lookin' white estate, but as he'd had to park well down the street* and it was p***ing down with rain I did'nt get a real good look at it ......he did'nt take the trailer tent [we did'nt open it up for him to see it due to the rain] ......so hopefully he'll be back, I'll give the club another "plug" and show him the website,he might realise wot he's missing then

* some of our neighbours think they have to buy a ticket to park on their own drive

I come to the conclussion the only way I am going to see a BX is either wait until the winter when the Ski area I work attracts them up or head for somewhere near Citroen dealership
Other than one lowly Xantia I saw the other day not so much as a glimmer of a Citroen and I live beside a Main Highway :o trouble is the term Highway is misleading as today I spent 5 minutes talking to a neighbour in the middle of the road before a car came by

I am starting to think that if I can find another BX as a donor car its going to be a good choice yet they all seem to have vanish the ones worthy of being a donor. Much like my bank account

We had - IIRC - 42 GS's show up at the National. That's probably a BIG percentage of the survivors.

By contrast, there were something like 400 Rover P6's at the Anniversary rally I went to a couple more years ago. How many more GS's were produced than P6's?

It's the mass-produced cars that disappear!
