Hand brake adjustment

Post by classic2cv »

when I try to adjust the handbrake it does not last long

do the state of the discs and pads greatly affect the handbrake

and if I replace both will the auto adjust start working again :?

Are your calipers sliding normally?

I've just had mine off, lubed them up, bit of grease at the back of the pads, fitted springs - makes a huge difference to the car in general, including the handbrake.

You'll need to get the front end up on axle stands, get a 17mm spanner and a bit of grunt to get the bolts off, copper slip for the sliders, threadlock when you're putting them back on again. Chances are the rubber bellows at each end will have perished too, so put liberal globs of high-temp grease at each end to keep muck out.

Put a dab of grease on the back of the pad where it hooks over the caliper, and on the little right-angled sliding piece of metal that keeps them in place too. Don't smear it all over though - ideally you don't want any grease on your discs/pads

Be aware that the little springs on the pads have to fit JUST so, in order to keep tension on the pad.

I didn't know those springs existed until last time I did mine - I'd never seen them before. They don't come as replacements with new pads, so don't lose them!

Have you checked the cables for damage/kinking?

the cables are showing their age but are still moving ok

the lever can be moved back by hand but it seems that the spring wont push it all the way back

i've been working it back & forward with a spanner to see if it can be loosened a bit more
