My mate is in the army and uses his Passat (bought of course from Leech motors) to go all over europe and it is insured on the chassis number not the reg no.

I guess these are all estates Mr. B??
I know this is a story which has rumbled on forever, but surely any 19TD would have to have been the very last BX's and probably experimental??
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

But how do you insure a car that doesn't have an MOT or UK tax unless you get insurance from a French company etc. etc. And how do you get insurance from a French company if you don't live there (anymore even)... Am I just being daft or is it a Catch 22?
Trade insurance would probably cover it, but can`t be that difficult for the most determined to get insured in France?

I do not believe in the existence of a factory 1.9TD.

Easy, insure it with a French company :) If memory serves, insurance is cheaper over there.

There was no factory 1.9TD, not a mass produced car anyway.

I think you'll find that one of the benefits of buying secondhand vehicles in the EU is that there is no import duty, when we lived in the UK I bought several cars / mopeds etc in France and never paid any, and was never asked for any when they were registered.
Prices are higher here though, its difficult to find any decent 2nd hand vehicle here at less than about 1000 euros - about £650, there are not the same amount of fleet vehicles flooding the 2nd hand market, and they do not seem as obsessed with buying new cars as people in the UK are, not so much keeping up with the Jones's or whatever the french equivalent is.
Paul in Normandy - BX 1992 Millesme 1.9D, 1999 Peugeot 806 2.1 TD (the Bus) - gone bang on the M25, in a scrapyard somewhere in the SE of England, 1985 Visa Decouvrable, 1990 Land Rover 110TD (Great Uncle Bulgaria),1999 Isuzu Trooper, 1991 Hymer motorhome with Peugeot J5TD power, and a shedfull of mopeds!

I'm fairly sure there is no French equivalent, which probably shows the cultural difference. Unfortunately, I think things are gradually changing in France... for the worse.

On the subject of the 19 turbo D, I wouldn't believe anything I see in e-bay descriptions. I bet it's just an ordinary 17TD, or why would it produce only 90bhp ? Changing engines from the standard type is a very complex business in France, needing official authorisation ; I have never heard of anybody doing that here. That car might even be a plain old 19D... I once saw a Xantia being sold on e-bay as a BX !

I went to look at two TZDs advertised as Turbo 1.9s when looking for mine, both were N/A diesels, one was a 1.7 RD with a Halfrauds turbo sticker on it! the other a 1900 TZD N/A the bloke honestly thought he had a turbo (that black plenum chamber) I once met some guys who were travelling around Belgium with trade plates, buying up interesting iron and getting them to the ferry ports, they then shipped them en bloc and got them MOT tested, then brit registered, They said 30% tax, that was pre 1992 when it all changed, I looked at buying a Dodge Challenger over there, I would have needed some plates to get it to the ferry, then I think 30% import tax on its reciepted value, wish I had now :?

The very last BX TurboD were fitted with the 1,9l Diesel engine from the Xantia already! Produced in spring 1993. Only really few were sold in germany and france and only to selected customers. Citroen wanted to "test" the engine before the Xantia started.
Same thing with the hydraulic pump. The very last 19 TZD had a different one with two "exits", one for the brakes only, the other one for suspension and power steering.
I have the original Citroen documentation here. It says to have a VERY close look on those cars, if there are any difficulties or damages with that new system.
