1992/K Platinum TZD Turbo

Post by capri »

Hi all

Just putting the feelers out. I'm not sure I want to sell just yet but if someone offers me the right money for the TZD, I would consider letting her go.

The TZD is currently sitting on my driveway in need of a clutch cable and it's not a cheap job to get done. I'm not sure I can afford the work so I'm thinking about selling the car and replacing it with something which is a little bit more easy to repair.

About the car: it's a 1992 BX TZD Turbo, finished in metallic platinum (ETB / Gris Dolmen). It's now done 112k, and has an MOT until August and tax until the end of June. It's had three owners prior to myself, the last of which was Gareth, also of this parish. He carried out the following work to the car during his time of ownership:
I changed the cambelt, tensioner and camshaft oil seal

(next belt change 145,500). Oil and filter,( both of which have been changed every 5k miles since)

Fitted two new rear suspension arms with new rear hubs/bearings. One new n/s ABS sensor unit (ouch £72!) on rear.

Fitted four new discs and pads

Four new Michelin Energy 165/70X14

Two new front brake calipers (one's Lockheed other is Citroen)

New handbrake cables

99K new air filter and flushed radiator clear. Thermostat fine.

100,800 drained LHM and filled with 5L Hydraflush

103,900 drained Hydraflush, cleaned LHM filters (then replaced them with OEM new filters)

104 fitted new tinted windscreen. (original had a star which was OK MOT though

fitted two rear spheres and accumulator sphere

105,200 replaced o/s/rear suspension arm

106k fitted water temperature gauge which NEVER goes over 80.

107k fitted two new (nitrile flow and return fuel pipes) originals looked corroded.

108k 2 new outer CV boots and at same time drained and refilled gearbox with Total BV 75N/80W
Gareth also serviced the car before selling it to me, meaning that the next service is due at 114k. Since I bought the car, I've not had to do anything much to it, although I have fitted anthracite Speedline alloy wheels with £210-worth of brand new Falken tyres.

There are bad points, and I'm going to include everything I know about here for the sake of honesty, although most don't actually interfere with the running of the car and can be solved fairly easily. Firstly and most obviously is the snapped clutch cable - this means that while the car starts and runs it doesn't drive so it'd need lifting if you were to buy it from me now. Other points of note: the turbocharger is leaking oil slightly, although it still boosts and the car still drives well and reliably. The height correctors need adjusting. There's a rattle from the front suspension - sounds like one of the drop links - it's only started recently. And there's some surface rust starting to appear on the front subframe.

Most of these are simple jobs that you could do at home if you were a DIY'er. Unfortunately I'm about as handy with a spanner as Big Bird.

However, once you see past these problems it is a low-mileage TZD in excellent bodily condition (I would go as far as to say it'd be hard to find one like it). Gareth kept it in a CarCoon throughout his ownership so the paintwork is in excellent condition. I've been careful to clean it regularly in my time of ownership. It has the advantage of a temp gauge (which, as Gareth has said, doesn't ever go above 80). And it's got £210-worth of new tyres on it.

Taking all of the above into account, make me an offer and if it's enough to tempt me, you might get your hands on a cracking example of the breed that just needs a few hours' work to bring it up to concours condition. If it doesn't sell, I'll pay the money to get the clutch cable done and keep her a bit longer.

Alex, DO NOT SELL THIS CAR!

You are highly unlikely to find another decent one. They're really thin on the ground now.

Get somebody local to help you change the clutch cable and keep it going. I've got a clutch cable you can have if you're that strapped for cash.

If you lived closer i'd do it for you happily.

Why are you selling mate? Because it has problems that you do not have the time or money or inclination to fix or cos you longer need or want it? If it is the the former and ideally want to keep the car, then take up peoples offers of help and get it back on the road and enjoy...outwardly it seems excellent condition. If I didn't hate doing clutch cables so much I would offer myself...but I really do hate them

I'm sure I could find some time somewhere to whap a cable in it, rather do the cable than the turbo!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Crumbs. OK, OK!

I never said I was definitely selling, just interested to hear any offers anyone might have if they wanted her as she was.

But don't worry yourselves too much - I've had a change of heart and she's going in tomorrow for a new clutch cable. At the weekend Kitch and I will hopefully be going through and resolving all the minor issues which have cropped up.

As regards why I've been considering selling up: I will be in France for 9 weeks and I need something that's not going to break down on me while I'm out there. In the time I've owned URJ, she's had two breakdowns which have both resulted in me having to be recovered on a low-loader. Bodily, she's in lovely nick, but I think mechanically she's starting to feel a little bit tired. While that'd be fine for someone with DIY abilities and a few tools, I have neither, and my second car is supposed to be a runaround rather than a toy, so I need a car that's going to be reliable. If she breaks down in France, I won't have the RAC cover and nor will I have the handy support of a mate just down the road at home - so life could become both expensive and complicated! But I do love driving her and she would be a fun (and cheap-to-run) old beast to hack around in down there, which is why I'm going to give her one last chance. If she wasn't a BX, she'd probably have had the boot by now!

If she continues to be reliable over the next six weeks or so, and we don't have any more major breakdowns, I'll take her to France for my 2-month sojourn. But she's on strike three now, effectively, so any more problems and she'll be back up for sale on here!

Tom - Thanks for your offer of help, but as said above, it looks like the situation will be resolved by tomorrow evening. :)

For 9 weeks?! That'd cost me more than the BX is worth!

FWIW, I've found mechanics in France to be excellent. I'd rather break down there than here.

Just my two penn'orth.

EDIT: and I went to France for a year in an unreliable 1973 Rover 2000 and for six months in an unreliable 1976 CX...

I know what you mean Stuart. However, the problem for me would be getting the car from where it decides to dump its hydraulic fluid all over the road (for example) to where there's a friendly mechanic, and then hoping the friendly mechanic won't charge me the earth to do a job he's said he's done but in reality he hasn't.

It's a shame matey if she scores the third bullet of death!! Typically, your motor is going through it's teenage years...everything is just fucking you up the arse. I have the stoopidity of saying 'it's ok old girl...I understand..' and keep her on the road beyond what others would deem reasonable....
Clearly, you need something reliable....a well sorted BX will give you everything you'd expect from a more modern motor at a fraction of the cost. BUT, it's not necessarily cost of fix vs cost of alternative car, but also the the added inconvenience of the breakdown and eventual loss of confidence. It's a fine line mate, give her a thorough going over and consider what mat potentially take her place...
