The ones that clip on the tailgate are OK if you dont overload them, if there was a lot of weight on them it may damage the top lip of the tailgate - that said I used to carry 3 mountain bikes on one on a Fiesta with the rack resting on the window and never came to any harm

I long ago started using a towbar mounted one for preference.
Next up would be a roof rack mounted one.

hmmm

how much do you reckon it costs to have a tow bar fitted, cause that seems to make more sense to me rather then loading up an old cars hatch??

If you can find one of somone on te forum or from CCC - cost can be as little as free or a pint to about £20 - DIY - simple bolt up jobbo on the BX and even numpty like me can fit one. Wiring is a matter of scotchblocs.
Post a wanted ad and Im sure somone will oblige somewere.

Otherwise new ones are about £40 - try towbars direct (the towbar man) often advertises on ebay.

I have a Metro one, but thats no use to you.....

I've got a bike rack that fits a BX hatch. The possibility that the plastic hatch top may crack or a chunk break off is small but I didn't want to risk it so I got those 'cotton reel' like fittings that drop over the top of the hatch and take the strain in the inner roof/hatch opening frame. Difficult to explain but it works fine. Use a piece of cut up old rubber car mat to cushion the area that the side hooks fit onto the hatch too, just to be safe. One of the two main supports does indeed rest on the glass, (it's well cushioned, so no ill effects) and the lower support rests neatly where the bumper/number plate panel meet. The lower straps tie around the familiar 'tow hook' structures beneath the bumper.

The rack takes two full sized adult bikes and a mid-sized child's/teenager's bike (but I'm sure a third adult size would fit it's just a bit awkward)...

I bought the rack from Decathlon in France and it looks the part too. Really well made and easy to fold flat when not in use.

I might sell at the right price. I'd have to check with the boss.

The other thing is to consider roof-mounting...

Charlie, I have a towbar here you can have for nowt. You might be lucky if Doc is still up this way and available because he was going to Vanny's to help out with something and could possibly pick it up? (Though please note I haven't asked him if he could). If you can reach Doc and he can get to mine let me know mate.

Rince thy mouth out with used LHM! Scotchlocks are the work of the devil, and are guaranteed to cause wiring problems.

If you're going to do it properly, soldered connections are the only way to go. If you wanted to be flash about it, solder in an "auxilliary" socket to the wiring loom, and solder a plug to the towbar wiring, thus allowing you to disconnect it again at some point in the future.
