Make your GTi fly!
This should be a hoot I reckon but surely upgraded engine internals would be required?

They cope pretty well actually - I've had one in the past. It was pre-fitted and had already done 25k when I bought the car. I put another 14k on it before selling it on and it was just as reliable as the standard engine while I used it. Its quite low pressure boost, and 180bhp is at the flywheel NOT at the wheels. You get around 140 - 150 at the wheels. The boost didn't kick in until about 2300rpm on mine and there was huge lag while it spun up. I think it was a Garrett T25 I had, but it could have been a T30 to be honest. Went like shit off a shovel though, just had to watch the redline closely. 50 - 70 seemed to be over before I'd pout my foot down. Wouldn't have one again though unless it was in a third car. I averaged 24mpg over the 14k, the worst I ever had was 11.2mpg over 50 miles of country driving...
It wasn't much faster than the 16v, but power delivery could hardly be called smooth. What was it Clarkson said? Like falling down stairs with leg callipers on? Pretty much covers it - would rather have the 16v any day.
Matt.

that setup is very low blow, and indeed power delivery is w*nk.
If I was going to turbo either the 8v or 16v units I'd lower the compression ratio first and up the boost a bit....

Chipping a non turbo'd car will gain you basically nothing. On a 125bhp gti you'd be lucky to get an extra 10 brake. Does improve the power curve though, but imo you'd be hard pushed to notice unless its on a rolling road.
Unless a power box is different to a super chip and I'm talking toss?
Matt.
[EDIT] - Unless you're on an already modded engine. Fast road or race cams and all the other tweaks really do need the ECU remapping to get decent performance.

Matt, Superchips quote a 10bhp increase with the powerbox. I just remember it felt like the increase in power made up for the extra transmission drag on the 4x4. I never fitted it, i have no instructions and I cant really remember how it all connected up.
Mulley, i cant honestly imagine it would be much good to you but if you can find some info on it then maybe it could be refitted.

If I remember correctly it's a power boost valve Ian, heard various stories about their effectiveness. I believe there IS a noticeable power increase but not a great deal unless fitted with a chip and possibly some other mods. I think they just add a bit more power through the range, more noticeable when going through the gears. I bet an internet search would throw up how to fit them and expected increases in bhp.
