Not as exciting as 100000 miles but there u are, which now means its done 140000 miles as I replaced the broken speedo at just over 90000 miles in 1999.

Just as a question.... given that the speedo shows you were travelling at nearly 50mph, did someone else take the photograph?

Ah, that explains it then! If it did work that could explain the tappets you say rattle, although TBH I've heard alot worse..

To be honest asides the tappets the engine pulls like a train and showed a clean pair of heels to a Escort on the way home when he tried it on, ive changed the gauge but I think its the switch, but until I take the inlet manifold off to replace with the polished one i cant get at it.

They are a bit of an ar$e to get at.
Although the unit itself is actually quite reliable.
more likely the wire from it is corroded to hell, they usually are.
By far the best thing to do is run a continuous wire from the sender to the dash direct, with the lowest resistance wire you can get.

Cool, well I want to get the tappets done at some point so will whip the inlet and the exhaust off at the same time and get them changed and sort the wiring, wil change the sender as a matter of course.

Am I the only person who thinks that was a rather silly and dangerous thing to do?

Well yeah, but then I cant talk really, I've done some, er, slightly silly things whilst driving, like sleeping, improving the carnal score, refitting the heater vent etc.....

Being in a scooby it's more likely he was trying to find the remote control for his MP3 player since using the controls on the front of the stereo is just sooo last year, and Scooby drivers are, on the whole, cheesemongers.
