Hi, I have had a good look around and could find a post on my problem...
I have 1988 GTI 8v. She drove fine until recently.
She starts fine.
Now she's not the best in general and around 2500rpm she's worst 'weak' and splutters a bit.
Once over that she is better again.
To resolve the problem so far I have replaced:
Fuel filter, Distributer Cap and all leads, Spark plugs.
Any ideas?
I just got her NCTed today, that's MOT for you in the UK.

An '88 GTI would have the infameous airflowsensor (AFS) - known to cause that kind of problems when it wears or gets dirty on the resistor track inside the unit.
If its never been replaced before my guess is, it is worn out completely - being an '88.
The AFS signals the ECU how much air is flowing into the engine, and the ECU corrects the injected fuel volume accordingly. If the AFS signal gets wrong - so does the fuel volume, and then the engine runs erratic.
The same AFS unit is used on other Citroen/Peugeot models with GTI multipoint engines from the same era. You should therefore have a good chance sourcing a new sensor.
