While checking the air filter i rested the air flow meter assemby on the engine and battery.but it slipped and the metal wiring retaing tab hit positive battery terminal creating a 2 second panic and a bit of smoke.Went to start the car after re assembly it turns over but is not starting.HHHELP!!!!

Was it actually an electric connection that hit the battery plus terminal ?
- or was it just a retainer, bracket or other metal with chassis (ground) connection.
Unless you actually induced a voltage to an electric connector, I can not see how you could destroy anything. Except of course melting down some insulation.
You could have ripped just about anything in panic - not knowing it.
Carefully check the power splitter from the plus terminal smaller heavy gauge wire - the odd large black plastic cover that hides 2-4 huge spade connectors. This is a known BX issue if you wriggle it too much, or a large shortcurcuit current has passed through.

To clarify i caught the metal retaining tab [that holds the loom connector plug on to the air flow meter }on the battery + terminal .The car turns over ok but there's no sign of fuel pumping .Thanks anders for your suggestion will check that connecter block as it was disturbed with checking the air filter.

What bad luck. Have you gone through any testing procedures on the ECU plug for correct voltages ?
Do you have a spark ?
If all else fails then a flow meter is on ebay at the moment.....

I did exactly the same thing on a bx gti 1988 the airflow meter touched the positive terminal of the battery. There was a few sparks followed by the same symptoms you describe. I changed the airflow for a spare and everything was ok. I think it shorted the airflow meter out. ( that was on a bosch jettronic le3)

That way also keeps the fuel pump running constant ( i think ) as i had to do it for a couple of days while i sourced a new afmcitroen7 wrote:did the same thing myself a few years back, i seem to remember a citroen mechanic showing me how to bypass the airflow meter using the infamous black connectors , onced bypassed the car should start but will run roughly,and you wont be able to drive very far.
