Engine Removal

Post by kiwi »

I am stripping down the BX16RS I have and the final thing to remove is the engine. Question is can it be done without a winch?

In other words can it be dropped out of the engine bay?

Of course it can!

You just then need to lift the body over the top of the engine.

Providing you disconnect everything and don't forget the pipes that run under the engine you'll be fine. It's my personal preference doing it that way but I don't have the roof space in my workshop to lift a car that high :(

I've done this before too, but you do have to lift the body very high indeed. You'll need at least 2' of clearance between the front crossmember and the floor. In general, axle stands don't go anywhere near high enough, so you'll need some other form of stable method of holding the body at height.

Any chance of making up a tripod and put a balancing timber on top as a hoist crane ?
Even a supported memberpiece in the roof of your garage or shed ?

Done this a couple of times in my old barn - using some spare timbers I had and some 10mm rope.

I believe we once had a thread where an owner used a tree in his backyard 8)

Well the car is outdoor and is not going anywhere its the 16RS thats been dismantled. Last task is take out the engine and gearbox.
Assuming I can drop it then lifting the car is not a problem.

Going to give it a shot the body is going to be used in fire brigade training in a few weeks time. Nothing like a good B Piller rip 8)

I suppose you could have hours of fun cutting the front off with an angle grinder or similar tool

I did just that...

Disconnect every thing connected to the engine / gearbox, lowered the lump onto my home made crawler, then just cut the front out and pushed the car backwards..

If I remember right, it only took about an hour using a hacksaw..

After I examined the body, it was better than my other one ...

So I cut up the wrong one !!!...

No the angle grinder is one of the thoughts been crossing my mind.

The damn thing slipped off the stand yesterday or should say the jack found a rusty weak spot on the subframe. Before you say about stability etc etc well its on earth with a metal plate under each stand.

Basically we have had some heavy rain the ground subsided, that plus jacking it up higher on the other side did not help matters.

With cutting would removing the subframe help?

VICTORY!!!!!!

After much fiddling around and locating differant points to jack up finally got the engine out.

Had to use the angle grinder to take of the battery tray and exorcise the Gearbox mount. The biggest problem was the OS drive shaft because the wishbone would not seperate from the strut.

Anyways its (engine/gearbox) out now sitting in the Garage 8)
