Noisy Strut

Post by tim leech »

No not groaning when going up and down, the GT has developed a slight "knock" from the nsf when going over bumps, it may be a coincidence but it didnt do it before the new front pads were fitted.

Anyway with the front wheels off the deck the nsf strut the strut itself can be moved up and down when grabbing hold of the wheel and lifting it, looking inside the bonnet the top of the strut can be seen to move slightly, and you can here the noise when you do it.

Any ideas? the car rides fine and everything seems tight.

Track rod ends springs to mind when you say NSF as thats the side tha hits all the potholes on the side of the road

Unless those three bolts are loose on top of the strut movement up there is pretty normal.

The strut is held into the sphere mount with a large nut accessible under the rubber cap - is this tight? - I'd have thought if it had worked loose the top seals would have broken up and you would have had a serious LHM leak. This nut should be tightened with a ring spanner as the strut shaft should be held with an allen key.

Is the bolt securing the hub to the strut (goes crossways) tight? If it was loose I'd expect to see some marks at the join - ie mud displaced or rust.

It sounds just the noise a worn droplink makes.

Thanks jeremy, it does indeed sound like a shot droplink, its getting more noticeable.

I've been looking for a bj for ages now. Apparantly if I buy her flowers and 'do the washing up' (whatever that means) I might get one :D

After some experiences this summer, I'd check the lower arm as well, while doing a check with a helper.

One sits in driving seat and waggles wheel to order, the other checks through for play and knocks in just about everything mentioned in the thread so far. It's a "change the parts in turn" scenario otherwise - and who wants to change a BX balljoint, for example, unless it's really necessary?
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

Thats the sort of thing I do when I've got 10 minutes to kill and I'm bored.
But then I am clinically insane..
