Hi
I have two estates and the tailgates both have the same rattles which are driving me slightly nutty. Listening to the rattles always reminds me of a monty python sketch where John Cleese screams at the annoying background music "shut the bloody bouzikis". Oh well I guess you had to have seen the sketch...
Is the rattle(s) factory fitted or is it an acquired option?
cheers
David

The problem is that over time the seal compresses and distorts, allowing the tailgate to rattle.
The gate is located by 2 wedges each side of the aperture towards the bottom and by the catch at the bottom.
The first thing is to make sure that everything is tight - ie the catch in the lid and the metal loop on the car. If it is, try moving the wedges outwards to tighten the fit and slackening and moving the bottom catch towards the front of the car.
On mine one of its many previous owners had had trouble as the bottom catch is held on by a long bolt going through the large box section underneath which presumably means that the original captive nut arrangement expired. This is not a very satisfactory bodge as a distance piece needs to be used inside the box to prevent it crushing when the bolt is tightened.
I stopped mine rattling about 8 years ago and its still quiet even if the shut line isn't quite as nice as it should be. To sort the bottom catch properly looked like a welding job which I didn't want to do at the time and its possible that I 'adjusted' the bottom catch with a hammer - what I do know is that it still works!
