Urgent! M.O.T. Failure

Post by pinfold »

Its that time of year we all dread! The M.O.T.

The 16V has failed on a few things this time including:-

The obligortory "corroded break pipes" allthough what he thinks is a break pipe is actually return leg pipes, young lad, dosnt understand the car! slight bit of rust, what do you expect from something made of steel

Steering rack gaiter?

have sorced everything apart from the gaiter, Gsf cant get me one at all, so im a bit lost as what to do

Any suggestions, before i take out a mortgage fropm citroen, and then have to wait 6 years for it to be delivered?

:(

In which case, educate him! I've had to educate MOT testers about my specific vehicle (whatever that has happened to be) on more than one occasion in the past. What he's believed to be a fail often hasn't been.

Prime example of which is CX steering. "That's a fail, you've got too much play"... "err, no. that's how it's designed. Now start the engine and try again"

ROFL! I wonder how many Cit's have begun to sink while the MOT man is desperately trying to align his headlight aim testing unit?

Not as many that have been failed due to no handbrake efficiency.

No, the FRONT axle you complete twonk. You've just been under the car and checked the handbrake cables. Where did they go?

Its interesting to note that steering rack gaitors are no longer available from GSF, as they were when I bought a set just over 18 months ago.

So theres another item that will be getting hard to source :(

Another thought for you, have you tried Euro Car parts, as they do sell loads of bits in addition to what you will find in their current catalogue.

Good luck and let us know how you get on, as if this is a tricky item I thinking I might get a couple of boot kits while I still can.

Steering rack gaitors are rubbish on BX's anyway, I always use rubber Pug ones. Easily and cheaply available everywhere!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Yep we had that when I MOT'ed Ian Fearns TZD for him this year, the MOT tester went the same colour red as the BX when he realised!

Every Citroen I've ever taken to MoT has failed on handbrake efficiency.

I've started to wonder why they even bother.

The only time it's ever been a surprise was on the ZX - that's a conventional car and the handbrake did actually work. I used to park it on some of the hillier bits of Brighton - roads where I have had other cars escape from under me in the past.

Oddly, the only car I've ever owned with a seriously broken handbrake (Saab 99 with a broken lug on the handle, so you could release the handle by knocking it sideways) passed on it. It shouldn't have.

Post by Geoffrey Gould »

Hi mine are not that old (replacement rack) but the near side bit thats about 2" long has all but disintegrated any ideas? Or is it the case of buying a set for just the one piece.
Thank you.
Cheers.
Geoff.

Ask around for general purpose rack gaiters with tapered end bellows. They can easily be cut to fit almost any make of steering rack.
They are available cheeply around here in DK at motor factors. (some £5/ea)

No worries mate, the rack boots on the valver are perfect! Er, the other valver...
The one with no back end...
Yeah, that one.
