Pity about the house, nice car though!
Ain't life funny! We're going to be moving soon and are looking for a new house. We looked at one last week, not a brilliant location, and a somewhat tired house. But, sitting in the garden was a BX Estate looking a little folorn, having obviously been superseded by the nice? new Laguna in the drive. 1994, BX 17TZD Turbo Estate, 96,000 miles, two owners, with just a couple of minor dings. Having told the house owner we weren't interested in his house, I asked if he had thought of selling the car, he said he had, but wasn't sure. We exchanged 'phone numbers and I said I would be in touch. Rang him over the weekend, and I am now the proud owner of my sixth BX. Drives like new, with recent spheres all round and a set of new tyres. I think I did quite well for £500, but only time will tell. Off to collect it on Thursday, once I've sorted out the insurance. I'll let you know how things pan out.

Malcolm, you'll note that I wrote - nice? - when I mentioned the Laguna, it all depends upon one's viewpoint. I wouldn't touch a Renault, but have a friend who swears by them.
Lack of pictures due to two factors, i) I haven't taken any, and ii) even if I had my steam driven dial-up system and ancient computer probably coudn't cope anyway!
Up-date: Collected the car today, drives very smoothly, and goes like the proverbial off a polished shovel. Mind you I've been used to the other BX, a 19TXD which has now done 183,000 and is not as spritely as it once was. There are a few fixes to be done on the 'new' one. Fan doesn't work, but a new resistor will probably sort that, and a complete lack of dashboard illumination will mean I've got that horribly fiddly job of replacing the bulbs. These, and a real clean will probably see it sorted. Just about enough time before the real seasonal weather sets in.

Fixorised!
There is only one viewpoint. Renault is french for Toilet.
Infact Renault really should have built the Xantia!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!
Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Dear, Oh, Dear!
I really seem to have started something here don't !?
I've had Renaults, an R4 - a 2CV badly built, and a Dauphine with a Ferlec Electric Clutch, that really is an OUCH!
The BX 17TXD Estate is, I believe, my 66th car, I've had everything from the sublime - 1928 Phantom I Rolls-Royce with a Weymann body, or a 1939 Lagonda V12 Drophead - to the ridiculous - 1956 Bond Minicar Mk D family Four, or a 1958 Reliant Regal MkIV, take your pick. There are bad cars, good cars, superb cars and awful cars, but they're all interesting in their own way.

I've had two R4s. My first was a 1969 model (in 1977) with 6 Volt electrics And we think Xantia Headlamps are bad these days
R4s have a very special place in my heart. As a very impovrished apprentice, they were dirt-cheap to run and utterly reliable. Even my peers stopped poking fun at them after a while but then, they had Avengers
I also had an R5. Great car, shame about the rust

I'm not anti-Renault, in fact the '99 Megane I owned fairly recently was honestly one of the nicest cars I've ever driven and had far, far more plus points (like 46mpg from a 1.6 petrol) than bad ones.
The Laguna, however, really is one of the worse cars ever made and in fact make the Xantia seem like a Rolls Royce. Truly dreadful car is the Laguna and about as popular second hand as a white dog turd.

Vauxhall apologist.

My first car was a Renault R8 which i bought for £5 and it had a siezed engine.
rebuilt the engine used the original piston's and liners (wet liner engine)
fitted a Renault 12 TS camshaft and a twin choke weber carb.
the engine was only 956cc but boy did she go reved easily to 8500 rpm
beleive it or not that little engine saw off three gearboxes in that car.
before the crown of number one piston came of and embeded itself in the cylinder head.
still i had 60000 miles of absolutely brilliant fun in that car
Then i bought a ford capri 1.6S mkII which i again rebuilt the engine this time i went the whole hog and blueprinted it.
That was a quick car for a 1.6.
Then i had a 35 cwt ford transit custom van with a rover V8.
Then i got married had kid's and a few relatively boring family friendly cars. (AS YOU DO)
Then i thought kid's have grown up they have cars of their own time to buy something for me so i bought the BX 1.7 TZD and a NISSAN SKYLINE R33 GTR finally i got back the fun i had with the R8 all those many long years ago.
But boy it's a lot more expensive now.
Anyway enough of my drivel glad to see another venerable BX has been clawed back from oblivion.
WELL DONE THAT MAN!

I'm glad someone found R4s reliable, ours was one of the worst cars we had, forever going wrong. We gave up on it in the end and ditched it for a Triumph Herald Estate, which the dealer we bought the R4 from sourced for us.
66 is the number of cars I can remember, I started in the late 1950s buying cheap cars with faults, repairing them and then running them until someother "challenge" caught my eye. If I remember correctly, the Rolls, the Lagonda, an ex-Royal Daimler Straight 8 and several others were bought with no brakes! So, if you want to know anything about mechanical braking systems, Clayton-Dewandre Vacuum Servo Units, or those dreadful Bendix-Cowdrey Cable braking systems, just let me know.
Some cars I've kept for a long time, the BX 19TXD Estate we've had for 11 years, we also had a BX19RD Estate, which we kept for 8 years. This one finally expired at 296,000, having been the family hack and helped teach two sons to drive. It had also been a cab before we bought it, so the mileage might be questionable, but it was really tired at the end.
As you can see I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to cars.
