With all respect, I think anyone who's ever re-piped a BX who's a bit more involved than just using a spanner.

I did learn that way. I bought a MK1 scrap BX, went to the yards and removed all the pipes from a late model accident damaged BX and set about re-fitting them to my scrapper. There are numerous problems but if I had failed, I would have lost a scrap BX and about £100.

The issue here I think is, Tim's 16v is no scrapper and worth somewhat more than any £100.

I've happily volunteered to do the re pipe when the weather gets a bit warmer and I'm sure Tim being the generous chap he is will recompense me for my efforts. :D If it fails the MOT and it should, trailer hire is no big deal, or my mate has a recovery truck.

I've always maintained that I only do re pipes on cars that are worth the effort and it is an effort. But this car of Tims, certainly deserves the effort.

Do it yourself you lazy sod! It's only a spanner and a bit of oil...........why rely on 'volunteers'....presumambly giving up their own free time :?

Ken Sorry to Hijack this thready but im sick of this.

" Im a Lazy sod" , Bandit? What is your problem with me and where do you get that Idea from, I do a 55 hour working week which includes weekends, on top of that I have 5 cars (my choice I know) and a house to maintain, plus the usual household chores!, being a single guy I have to do all my own cooking, cleaning etc and as for relying on volunteers? tell me who's that then?

I dont deny Ken has done work for me on one of my cars before yes a couple of years ago,for which I still have the receipt for as was more than happt to pay him what he asked for, the same as when Ian did a few small jobs, I paid him for this is form of a free MOT or two and some parts for his VW's, most recently and as we all know Doc and Vanny very graciously fixed my ailing 16v at the CCC show, on completion I offered both them some financial compensation for giving up there time to help me out, both of which refused, again guys, thank you!.

I get really PI**ED off with the assumption that i am after "something for NOTHING", that individuals think my purpose here is just to make a quick buck and take advantage of peoples good nature maybe because I happen to be a car salesman?, and that ideology fits within the age old public perception of my profession so I must be guilty of it.

Ive bitten my tongue before but I am sick of it, as Ken pointed out I save bx's that are heading for the scrap yard and or that nobody else wants, I do this purely for the fun, certainly not profit as there isnt any, normally quite the opposite, neither for a pat on the back by the club or to gain brownie points as it doesnt. I am happy to travel all over the country on trains/arrange lifts and even borrow car trailers at some considerable expense to fetch them, yet if I ask for help or parts which I am more than happy to PAY for I get lambasted by people for it!

Where I work will only do a few small jobs for me, they do this purely out of good will as im good mates with the service manager, they WILL NOT take on big staff car jobs purely because the mechanics are neither trained nor want to to the work in the first place. More likely than not they are always booked weeks in advance with services etc on cars they know and like.

Please bear in mind they, like most main dealers charge £75+VAT a hour retail yet only £30 for STAFF, so can potentially loose £45 for every hour working on cars they dont really want to work on in the first place, hence why I am having to teach myself what bits I can so to continue doing what I enjoy, however my skills are not up-to repiping as yet, and I dont know if they ever will, I dont have the tools, space, ramps etc to do it safetly, just the same as mulley doesnt for his arm bearings, please accept that not all of us are spanner wielding magicians and we know our limits, when you surpass those accidents happen.

So Mr Bandit in my situation what would you do? scrap it? sell it off on ebay for next to nowt to be a yet another 205 "donor"?, maybe pay a local citroen dealer or if you can find one a specialist perhaps (there is no-one locally that I know of) hundreds of pounds that I just dont have? or should I entrust it to "under the arches bodge motors" who are cheap and local but will probably do more harm than good!.

The only feasbale answer is give the work to someone in the club who knows what they are doing, but I stress ONLY IF THEY WANT TO DO IT!, that way its done properly, and someone has a few extra quid in there pocket, be it by trailer if the car is not deemed roadworthy or if it does scrape through the MOT, make its first outing to whomever to get the pipes and whatever it needs to make it safe and driveable?

I welcome anyones suggestions on this as I see no other options.

I CANNOT believe there isn't a indy cit garage somewhere in Derbyshire?
On a ramp a re-pipe is an hours work. The cost at three of the local guys here charge less than £200 for a full re-pipe in kunifer pipe and stainless unions. Cheap as chips.

As a total aside, I think the pipes are the least of your worries really. The corrosion in that car is getting bad already, another couple of years and it's going to be FULL of holes and structurally unsound.
I'll bet my pension the sills are gone front and back, I know the rear chassis legs need welding, the rear valance is paper etc...

I'd be alot less worried about the pipes, and a good deal more worried about cutting the rot out and welding some shiny metal in there before it becomes a MAHOOOSIVE resoration job.
I speak from experience. My valver is well rotten, although it's getting less so, but I aint sticking patches on top of rot, I'm cutting EVERYTHING out and starting again.
Now that would be UBER expensive to get a garage to do, re-mortgage house expensive, but it's the only way if the car is to have a longterm future......
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Nice to see Christmas spirit is alive & well in BX world!!!

I always thought part of the club ethos was to utilise the skills of various members to keep more cars on the road, I can only speak for myself, but if i offer my time i do so through choice, not for financial reward.

Doc I will have to do a bit at a time, purely because I dont have the cash available to do it all at once, I have a complete new rear lamp panel/valance to go on as I know mines been patched, my local bodyshop will do it for me as Ive spoekn to them, along with any welding the boot floor, its now down to me to save up the funds. Luckily you are in the fortunate situation to have the skills be able to cut the rot out and reweld in new metal, I dont and wouldnt entertain it for fear of messing it up or injuring myself

If Ken cant do the pipes himself then I will get that number off you for the local guys as 200 quid isnt too bad bearing in mind I have the pipes already so it may be cheaper, but I would much rather line the pockets of a fellow member than some garage I dont know.

Tim, the concept problem would seem to be not the cars that you buy for your own retention to be cherished as a long term companion but the "old snotters" as you used to term it that you "shine & sell"! It is these that have coloured peoples opinions also on the 16v car that you love.

If as you say, these have all been sold at a loss then that in itself would be seen as a misuse of funds, albeit several of these cars were free, so surely with T&T that significantly elevated the price? Selling on ebay cannot be any assurance of a future caring owner. But if contributing to worthy causes is your sole motivation maybe you need to consider a different direction (people charities maybe) because much as we love them, BXs will continue to decline with natural wastage unless in the possession of a true and mechanically able owner who will hold long term.

I sell on ebay. In fact I sold this car on ebay. But only after I offered it to people on here first.
But if no one wants them, then ebay is a good selling tool. We hope the cars find good homes but there is a limit to how much it is reasonable to do.

After I offered my cherished Mk1 on here for quite some time, still no one wanted it. So it went on ebay. Didn't meet reserve and I did manage to find a good home for it. But if it had sold on ebay, it would have gone. I personally feel I put a large chunk of my life into that Mk1, also saving it from the crusher, so I think I'd done my bit. Time to move on.

Done exactly the same with my XM, saved it from scrap, spent money on it and really love it. But when a new one comes along, it will be offered.
They think it's all over, it is now!

I dont get peoples reactions to this? Its Tim's hobby, his money he can do what he likes. If you disagree thats fine but to criticise somebody over this is just pathetic...

I think its time this thread was abandoned as its starting to annoy me....
