jesus, cheaper to buy some off the peg alloys that come pre-fitted with tyres.....infact those tyres are more expensive than the mini runflats that are on my car.....

As far as I know, the original ones were metric and yes, they need the special metric Michelins from Longstone at £110 each. These alloys have a silver centre disc.

The ones on the GT are later 14" wheels (from a mk2) that look like the metrics. They have a black centre disc (until I buy a can of silver paint :wink: ) and there's a recessed disc around the studs, which I don't think is there in the metrics.

Currently shod in new Michelin Energy 175x65s at less than £50 each. Not exactly original but good enough for me. :D

I dont personally rate Michelin's at those prices, for what are technically low spec tyres, thats why i went for Vredstein's 185/60's all 4 for under £120, bargain....

Not dissing your tyre choice as i quite like michelins, i just think that they are way overpriced for what they are & dont come out in tyre tests as good as other tyres which are cheaper by quite a margin.

Michelins do last a long time, managed to get 40k out of a set on a clio which was pretty good seeing as i gave them some hammer....but at £60 a tyre i was kinda expecting that to be honest....

Only reason I went with Michelins was for the anorak value :oops: . It's not my everyday car so longevity isn't an issue. Price might have come into it if there wasn't only a tenner between the cheapest that I'd be willing to trust and the Michelins. So the Michies got it. But not on the Alfa, where I can't fault Continental. But I'll stop there before we get into another my-tyres-are-better-than-your-tyres-thread... :D :wink:

Phil, no, went to a local fitter who charged about £20 to do the full monty, so just under £140 for the whole shebang....

Baldazza, of course my tyres are better than yours :lol:

Don't blame you for your choice, if u've had good experiences in the past & are happy with them then no argument from me.....

I just like to buy tyres that are better performers in the wet than the Michelins (it does appear to be raining more these days) & are quite a bit cheaper to boot in price. Some tyres can cost as much as the whole car :shock: .

All 3 of my cars all came shod with crap tyres, even the Gti although it had Michelins virtually brand new, they weren't the correct size, they were 175/65's i think, did have the correct speed rating though, so use them on my TXD in summer (currently using my winter tyres)....

<off topic>
<sad git mode>

Been thinking. Always dangerous but what the hell.

My first tyres in 1973 (yes it really is possible to be that old) cost around £20 each for 145/13 for my mk2 cortina. A 'normal' tyre now costs about twice that.

Petrol then was 7/6 a gallon, approx 8p per litre. Now costs 13 times as much.

Beer 2/6 per pint (12.5p). Now around 30 times as much.

And I earn a staggering 52 times more money than I did then.

Suddenly tyres seem pretty good value.

Except of course you dont, since inflation will have seriousley reduced the worth of the cash you earn.

In the 10 years I've worked for the bus company I now earn only £28 a week more than I did when I started.

And I'm bloody sure the cost of living has increased considerably more than £28 in a week since 1998.

I still remember when petrol was 72p a litre, and I thought that was expensive, I'm now paying £5 a gallon for diesel and 99RON petrol.
In short 1.4 of my take home pay goes on fuel for the car!
Good job I have other sources of income really aint it!

Of course. Merely pointing out that I had to pretend to work a lot longer back then to earn a tyre than I do now.

Thanks fella's, but I'll get some shiny new ones from my mate at the local tyre fitters. I'm very keen on Uniroyal Rallye 540's, but they are a PITA to get hold of, but he has some on order for me..
