Primer pump casing has been worn and "pin-holled"
I was happily pumping on the rubber button when I spotted diesel pissing out of some very small holes right at the bottom of the casing which seem to have been caused by the hydraulic pipes rubbing! has anybody seen this problem before and how easy is it to relace the casing?

Is this the casing for the fuel filter, and by the rubber button are you referring to its priming head? If this is the case it is straightforward to replace if you can locate a replacement.
I can't imagine that the hydraulic lines pinholed it as it's fairly robust but I'm imagining the set-up with a Bosch pump - maybe yours is different?

Sounds about right to me.
Though its the opposite I've seen : on 2 BX'es I had the main line under the engine rubbed through because some garage jerks did a sloppy pipe replacement work
BTW : have you ANY idea what happens when liters of LHM sprays out under the car backwards - hitting the hot, hot, hot catalyser
If the pump/filter housing is softer material than the rubbing pipeline, then the housing WILL be rubbed through over time.

pinholled and pissing diesel
I think I'd better get a Haynes!
Yes this is the fuel filter I think. It's alli about 4" tall and 2 1/2" in diameter with a lid and black rubber button on top which is the priming button. Anyone got a spare ?

2 types of diesel filter fit this description. One has a fairly plain cylinder with a pushbutton at the top: you push the primer button straight down. On the other, the button is mounted at an angle pointing towards the front of the car. Can't remember which is which offhand (Bosch/Purflux?).
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

If you have a scrappy near you the filter housing fitted to the rover 418sld is the same type as it uses the citroen engine.
It may have a slightly larger filter cartridge but if you use the bolt from the middle of your original it will fit no problem.
Give it a good clean and fit a new cartridge and seals.
This is the purflux type with a seperate housing at the bottom and an 11 mm headed bolt holding it all together.
Good luck!
