The autos are bloody lovely to drive to be fair Mulley, if that's your kind of thing. Don't get me wrong, the GTi should be manual I suppose to make use of the ace engine, but I'm quite a fan of autos now my age is starting to catch up with me!
Having said that I must still be a good twenty years behind most of the people on here, especially Doc, Jonkw and Vanny  *.

You're as old as you feel Billy! Sometimes I'm 15, but right now I'm getting used to being a ripe (very!) old 52......since Friday was my birthing day.

I agree that GTi Auto looks a cracker. Wonder if he fancies a part-ex on a decent TXD Turb?

I agree, that GTi auto looks cracking. They really are a lovely car to drive. Great as a Grand Tourer. If you want out and out performance there are other BXs out there for that, but as a refined effortless drive, nothing touches it. Air conditioning would have made it my ideal BX. 8)

Happy Birthday to the Man of the Mountain! ( Hope to see you in July at The National). Good selection of BXs there. Yes the auto GTI looks sweet - like a high performance wheelchair =P~ ( I've never driven an auto so what do I know) Buy the lot and make a hybrid GTI,16v, semi-auto, Estate diesel ( don't give Doc ideas!) :D

yes, happy birthday mountain man, I had my 57th the other day, and it feels good. Having been given up for dead twice so far, getting here is something of a milestone. But congratulations on yours mate. What is it Mr Spock used to say....live long and prosper, or another way of putting it is living is the best revenge!

Now to the less than serious stuff. Anyone know this ......

Billy, never driven an auto, but i reckon its a great Grand Turismo, the manual puts the "i" on the end :D . Both great cars, just slightly different.

That one does look sweet, anyone on here tempted???

Terry, looks like it's been sold. Quite a nice looking car, though the jury is out on the rear bumper/back panel. Reckon that'd need changing as the bumper looks gash.

Mulley, you need to have a ride/drive in a proper GT car, the bx most certainly isn't a good Gran Tourismo not by any stretch of the mind.

And the 'i' is for injected, which on most models used to represent a huge boost in power, which if you've driven a 1.4 bx on carbs then you'll realise the 'i' in GTi on the back of a BX is VERY missleading

I wouldnt ever compare a production saloon with a race car, the only similarity is that you can drive both & thats about it...

I presume thats what you were meaning?

No never driven a 1.4 on carbs, how much power can you get out of one of those?

125bhp in a car that weighs just over a ton is still pretty good by modern standards, not bad considering how little they cost to buy.

A true GT (or GTi) is not a race car Mulley but built for touring/long range endurance & travelling over good to poor road conditions with variable terrain. (but not off-road). As european hills & mountains come into play, a more powerful than basic engine is called for!
GT stands for Gran Turismo which translates closely as Big Tourer! 8)

In Mulley's defence, I think, essentially in terms of the BX range, the GTi auto is probably a pretty good choice for doing Grand Tours - ie lots of long distance continental driving at high average speed. OK the TZD Turbo could be too - but the auto box just adds a little something (but also takes something else away - like economy- just 30 mpg on a run). My old silver GTi 'DGK' auto which also had air con would have been the best BX for cruising down to Spain in....

Way2go, Cavmad and Ian Fearn might concur.

Before anyone gets too heated about the meaning of terms like Gran Tourismo, let's keep it in the context of the BX. After all a decent XM would beat it in that role, wouldn't it? 8)

Dear Grandad Childlow, yes your quite right about the XM being a better touring car in the right guise, but your quite wrong in making out that a discussion about what makes a good GT car is out of place on this forum. If we only talk about BX's we'll get very bored!

The issue with the 8v GTi especially the auto is the lack of pace. While W2G has outlined the conditions of the drive, the purpose is to get to a place quickly, not with excessive speed but to arrive at the destination with an average speed of at least 70mph. You think about a daily drive where your going slow to get out of the city then slow on the motorway, thats UK driving and thats what a GTi Auto IS very good at, its a competent short distance low speed low progress cruise car. Now go get a drive in Europe and the roads will typically flow much better, and you can happily sit at a chosen speed in the inside lane.

A GT can keep up pace on these roads, but still has plenty of reserve to overtake and or take action to avoid delays that no BX has. The 16v is much more suited to the job, and more comfortable for a longer period, its also a tad easier to drive. But its still very light weight and designed as a family car. Mostly its weight than ruins it as a touring car imho.

Now the SM, thats got possibilities as a touring car, as has the C6. Perhaps even the new C5 if they get a decent engine in it, but generally no car that Citroen makes is any good at a tour car, and you really have to do some serious driving in Europe to get a full appreciation of the difference int he roads. In fact the US is possibly the best place for a tourer (not on the interstates though).
