BX weights

Post by Matt H »

Hi all,

The other day I was switching the grey centre console to a black one from a 16v (to match the seats), when I noticed that there was soundproofing on the new one which wasn't on the original.

This got me thinking...

I had a quick look in the brochure from 1989, and it says that the 14 TE/TGE weighs 900kg, and that the 16v weighs 1070kg.

It's the same in all my other brochures too.

I think this is an incredible difference, and I was trying to figure out where all the extra weight comes from. A lot of it will obviously come from the engine and all the uprated parts for the 16v, but that can't account for all of it. All those added luxuries, and refinements (Yeah I know  ) must add a lot of weight. Is there a definitive answer? Are the weights quoted in the brochures incorrect or inaccurate?

Regards,
Matthew

A ZX 1.9D weighs about the same as the 16 valve and a Xantia weighs about 1/4 tonne more!

All those extra bits add up - the 14 has a much smaller engine and gearbox, no electric windows, no air con, PAS and so on.

It's amazing what those 8 extra valves weigh - but they are relatively large (36mm?)! And heavy man 8)

Surely the 1.9 engine would be lighter as it has a bigger capacity therefore contains more air... :?
Or maybe it's down to the extra plastic in the badge???

The 16 valve weigh's more today than it did when it was new because of the extra cash you need to fuel the thing.
It's getting close to the point where you can double the value of your car by filling up with fuel.
How the hell did that happen.

Regards Kermit :) :)

Weak US economy, greedy oil companies, thieving governments.
Probably in that order, or there abouts!

The P2 valver was heavier than the P1 due to the glassfibre bumpers and wot not.

The valver engine is quite heavy, although a diesel lump is heavier..

when my wife was told back in august 07 that she was to have radiotherapy diesel was around the £1.05 per litre if i remember correctly
Now it.s going up by 1 or 2 pence a week.
saw diesel at £1 30.9 today.

found out today why the old BX wasn't running too well since being laid up in october last year.
the diesel has lost it's get up and go it smells more like white spirit.
I have removed the tank sender unit with my home made special tool and removed the remaining diesel from the tank.
so now when i have saved up enough dosh to buy some new stuff i will flush it through and get it going again.

sorry for straying from the point

Regards Kermit :) :)

Diesel aint what it was mate, it degrades rather quickley these days...

Down at the end of the village the filling station (which is the only one anywhere near handy) the price of DERV is very nearly £1.36 a litre today..

sounds interesting. What exactly is 'your special tool' Kermit? I've got some tank duties pending..
