Are these any good???

Post by MULLEY »

Not sure what to make of these, they sound like a good safety idea, but do they actually work & make that much of a difference?? Anybody got any views or know anything about them?
Or is this just more marketing spiel....

the only fast responce bulbs are the LED bulbs you can get but they are expensive.. I think Demon Tweaks do them.

lower resistance, thus faster current draw and illumination. Snake oil though, you'd need decent silver wirng between the bulb and the switch

Yes, apparently a thicker element protected by an uprated gas mixture. Benefits are only going to be seen if your wiring is tip-top with no voltage drops going through any connectors and switches.

A bit of lateral thinking! :?

Application of brakes occurs later in a slowing/stopping operation as in normal circumstances engine braking will slow you first and so a following driver will/should already be aware of your intention to stop before ever the brake lights illuminate.
Going to be only mainly needed by the type of bad driver who is forever "standing" on his brakes for no apparent reason.

"Normal" 21w brake lamps aren't exactly slow to light up, are they?

The claim is that the come on faster enough to make a difference of "a car's length at 60mph" A car is 14' long (ish) which is 4 meters (ish). 60mph is about 24m/s, so the claim is that they come on about 1/6 of a second faster. This would mean that ordinary bulbs take at least 1/6 of a second to come on, possibly longer

0.166 of a second is a fair length of time, and can easily be seen by the naked eye, as long as you have something to compare it to. Take a car with a LED high-level brake lamp for instance. LED lamps are practically instantaneous, so this would mean that there would be at least 1/6 of a second between the LED brake lamp coming on and the normal 21w brake lamps coming on. I can't say I've ever noticed a delay like that between an LED lamp and a normal brake lamp coming on.

That must mean that these amazing brake lamps from Phillips must come on before you've even pressed the brake pedal. Now that truly would be amazing.

oh i beg to differ, filament bulbs should start to give off emision as soon as any sort of voltage is supplied. An LED needs 0.7v to be present before the reverse brakdown voltage is met and the LED illuminates. Thus LED have a defined (and calculable) switch on time.

Oh come on, if where splitting hairs we might as well have a really good go at it :D[/quote]

This is true, but below about 3v a 21w car filament lamp will give off nothing but infra-red. When supplied with 12v, there is a warm-up time for the filament to achieve full brightness.

This is true, but being as an LED has no warm-up time, the light is there at just about the very instant that voltage is applied. The calculated switch-on time is milliseconds.

However, my point is that even a 21w lamp doesn't take 1/6 of a second to achieve full brightness, so how on earth can anything else be 1/6 of a second faster?

Everything Demon Tweeks sell is expensive. Anyway whu would anyone want to waste money on these bulbs? Just brake a bit quicker and save youself a few quid!

....or even just adjust your brake - light switch, so it comes on as soon as your foot "thinks" about touching da pedal!

I can tell the difference between LED and incandescent traffic lights by looking - indeed most of the modern LED ones have a fade function when they go off to make them look more like incandescent filaments. I can still tell though. And I'm a sad bastard!! LED tail lights on cars I can spot a mile off too - they do really odd things to my eyes....

There was some research done a while back in somewhere far east (Manilla maybe?) where there are lots of rear end shunts. They fitted a load of cars with 'predictive' brake lights - the lights came on if you lifted off the throttle fast - on the asumption that the next action would be to brake. ISTR that rear end shunts were cut by a significant margin on the cars so equipped.

Still snake oil if you don't do a load of inner-city driving though
I NEED a BX TD.
