Interesting bit of exhaust pipe

Post by Matt H »

Don't know what it's actually called, but it bypasses the central exhaust silencer on the GTi/16v/TD

Having spent a lot of today watching BX Sport go around a circuit, this could be the start of my track car project!

Ah yes...

And many thanks for teh pipe, which will give about 3BHP on TD, but more importantly up the torque by a whopping 12LB/FT!
Makes virtually no diffeence in exhaust note ona diesel, but by heck they make a valver, er, well, as Jon said, mental!

They free up a fair bit of BHP on a valver, but aint legal for road use and frankley get dang annoying after 30 minutes of giving it beans.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Can't see why they're not road legal on a valver, but I had one and although a bit pokier lower in the revs, it was a bit strangled higher up I thought. Sounds gash too, made it sound like a Nova

Should say "for diesels only" :P

Any thoughts on using it with an 8v GTi?

I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it gave more of a noise boost than a power boost! Nice trouble-free way to bypass the box though, as I assume this item still has a hanger on it.

Are you going to have a bid Phil? Or have you done so already? I am interested, but I'm not going to bid against you if you are - I can always find out whether he has another...

I have bid. But I am not wedded to it, so even if I win it I'd consider passing it on for cost.

Are you thinking of track day-ing your new toy once you pick it up? Is that another GTi auto?

If I were to fit this pipe I would have a 4k mile Bosal box coming off, so could possibly do some kind of swap if you won it and didn't use it. Good luck!

I have a mind to find a good GTi manual to strip out. Next year maybe. In the meantime the GTi auto I am hoping to collect will be given an easy life!

I wonder whether a stripped out TurboD would make a good (perhaps ironic!) track car? Given a petrol gearbox it would at least be quick in each gear, but obviously run out of revs very quickly.

(I have driven mine in an autotest once, when my promised ride in a friends car failed to materialise. Managed to come 14th out of about 30 entrants, which wasn't too bad I thought considering that handbrake turns were out of the question...)

The noise increase is rather alot, but unless you've got a proper resonator and back box it does indeed sound like a bean can exhaust 1.0 Nova.

The power increase comes form losing the back pressure created in the cross box whilst retaining the overall flow length of the exhaust.

Kitch, the noise level with said pipe falls fowl of the law. Ok the chances of PC plod ever stopping a BX for a decible check is low, but it could happen.
Although they seem to mainly pick on bikers and 12 year old's in Scobby's...

Almost exactley the same principle.
It will release about 2-3 BHP and make it a bit raspier.

There's an awful lot you can do to an 8V lump to get a huge amount of power.
As it goes you can get fairly good increases in power and torque without spending mega bucks too.

If you want a balls out track car, I'd worry less about the devil pipe and more about spending some time on the noisey bit in the front!
