306s do seem to suffer a lot of abuse
Sometimes it's the verbal variety too, and deserved.
My brother had a Jekyll-and-Hyde petrol 306 which drove and handled beautifully but regularly played up in the fuelling department once warmed-up, normally at the other end of a long trip.
Problem is, small cars cost more.
Don't I just know this after trying to find a small car secondhand for my daughter's 21st - I encountered some of the most over-treated, over-priced or just plain scrofulous cars I've ever seen.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.
All we are selling at the moment is small economical cars and diesels, a gent in today had a 56 plate V8 Rangie and a BMW 650 Cab, purchased (used) in Feb for £45k now worth £25k I couldnt get a bid ANYWHERE for the Range Rover.
Well, the saga's finally over! I thought that a ZX/306/Xsara would be best for her, and sent several her way (including Phil's) but she thought Xsaras were too big and ZXs too ugly and too old.
So, I got a text from her this morning and she's gone and bought... a Citroen ZX! No idea what it's like, but for £200 I'm not expecting much.

Que?
Oh the Visa! That listing ended on 11th July, early because it was "no longer for sale". So Chris was probably waiting to bid but didn't get a chance...
Ah, skimmed back in the post & didn't register the date.
The zero bid business is confusing as it would seem that Ebay zero the bid counter if the listing ends early so it doesn't tell the truth at close of play!
Well, I've seen the legendary ZX! It's actually not that bad - but it's not as good as my £200 car. It's lowish mileage, goes, stops, is a 1.4 and has power assisted steering - exactly what she wanted. It's the right colour, and has obviously been well-maintained - except for the previous owner's total inability to park! It is dented on every single panel, including the roof! The tail lamps are both cracked and one of the foglamps is smashed. I took some photos but don't have the camera cable handy - it's packed in a box somewhere. Damn.
The rear axle is juuuuust starting to go and there's not much clutch left, so the plan is to run it until one of those things dies and then weigh it in.
Are these clutches adjustable? I remember a TZd I had that I thought the clutch was shot, Mr Newbold fiddled with the cable and hey presto all was well.

I adjusted a clutch on Chris's old 14 St Tropez, but to no avail because it was so verrrry buggerrrrred - it wouldn't go into any gear, unless we engaged 1st with the engine off and started with the clutch depressed - But I'd guess the ZX with the TU engine would be very similar.
Next to the clutch lever on the gearbox, there should be a bracket where the end of the clutch cable joins the lever, with an anti-rattle weight and either a single adjusting nut (as I found on the St Tropez) or two nuts locked against each other.
Err, Yes, the cable is adjustable, but that can usually only cure clutch spin (failure to disengage). In this case, the problem is the beginnings of clutch slip (failure to fully engage) and so no amount of buggering about with the cable will help, as proven by the existence of cable free play.
Depending on how it's driven I would expect it to last anything up to another 50k miles. That said I've known some drivers kill a brand-new clutch in 35k miles, so you never know.
