good news for modern man

Post by B-Hive »

hi

I thought alot of posts here are focused on issues/needs rather than the joys so....
...just a quick post reporting of a highly successful road trip in the BX. .

so I have just returned from a coast trip wherein I covered over 1500km in two days without a single hiccup. Amazing fuel economy aside, we were able to sit on 110-130 k's, hold a quiet conversation, and each time step out without any sense of having travelled very far at all. Highly satisfying given that I effectively rescued her from the knackers yard!!! The poise, the reserves of grip and her uncanny tracking, had me digging deeper and deeper into what this little retro auto could accomplish.

kudos little Citroen....kudos!!

Able to hold a quiet conversation? Surely not talking about a BX are we??

Anything above 70 & its a case of turn the stereo up as loud as it will go to drown out the tyre roar, wind buffeting & engine noise.....

Which model do you have? & how come its so quiet :D

He's talking k's Mulley so 110 equates to 68.75 in mph. :)

The GTi is a quieter model at speed too as you have more sound insulation material than the other variants! :D

I did spot that it was in kmh, what i said still holds true??? You sure about the Gti, that was just as loud at 70 as its revving more (perhaps the Auto's are different). I know some members have done some sound insulation, but where would you start :D

I'm sure my TXD is getting louder & louder, perhaps the exhaust or something else in the engine, a blowing kind of sound, but its towards the engine rather than at the rear of the exhaust. Possibly a gasket in the manifold???

A GTi auto is in my experience quieter than a manual for some reason.

I don't mind a bit of engine/transmission noise. However I find good, hard-wearing tyres (Michelin) can contribute to the noise rather a lot. And there's always the sunroof noise which a deflector s quite good at combatting and the windscreen upper edge too can produce presdigious amounts of wind noise sometimes.

None of these would be helped by better sound insulation I guess.

One thing the BX GTi does have is the worst exhaust note of any BX in my opinion. It never really sounds sporty or refined - it's always rough, agricultural - especially the centre pipe. Never known a quiet one. Now, dealing with the exhaust would cut down on noise a lot.

But none of the above takes away the essential appeal of the BX.

Just a though mate.......have you checked the little rubber "grommet/sleeve" thingy, that covers the hole where the clutch cable passes through the bulkhead and connects to the pedal?
Mine had been inadvertantly left off when I last swapped cables, and the extra noise coming inside the car from the engine bay was very noticeable!

.
The autos "top gear" is 25mph per 1000rpm where as the manuals is some 21.5ish which may have an affect is spinning that bit less?

......also an autobox / torque convertor generally makes less noise than a manual clutch / cogbox setup, as the moving bits are mostly 'damped' by fluid!

Mine's defintately not quiet, so you're not alone Mulley! Mind you the valver does have uber short gearing which doesn't help, and the 16v lump is hardly the most refined engine made!
