I'm not knocking your choice Tim, each to their own and all that but I am completely the opposite. Would rather travel in something I own, and I'm used to ('old faithful'), rather than an unknown new car.
The policy at a previous company I worked for was that when you got to a certain level, you had a choice between a company car (including fuel), or say an extra £3000/year, and claimed any business fuel back at 40p/mile. I never got to that level while I was there, but would definately have gone for the latter. There was an unwritten rule though, that the vehicle had to be "in keeping with the company image", and I'm not sure a 15 year old BX would fit that criteria...
cavmad wrote:If they pay your fuel that's pretty damned good. How would you fare if you bought your own car (say about 18 months old for arguments sake), would they they pay towards the insurance etc or would you just not have to pay company car tax or something?
If the company car goes, so would the insurance and most probably the fuel so lets hope things stay as they are, they would of course have to give me some kind of financial incentive but I would rather have my shiny new all expenses paid new Golf etc every 6 months than worry about using my own cars.
Yeah, you get taxed for having a company car don't you? I'd rather have a couple (or more) years old car of my own but each to their own. The flip side of working for a main dealer is only being able to drive one of 'their' products too I guess?
Yes I do, but I like the stuff I sell, I guess billy it would be the same as you working for a Vauxhall dealer, bear in mind the free fuel and insurance would only be covered by what I pay in tax, so its a no brainer for me as I do approx 15000 a year private mileage.
I Love my bxs and enjoy driving them but given the choice between that and a brand new top of the range Passat Golf etc with all the mod cons which I dont have to worry about putting miles on or wear and tear I will drive that, and then use the BX for weekends or special rides out which make it more fun and something to look forward too, keeps the mileage down, insurance costs are reduced due to limited mileage policys etc.

I'm running my BX as a classic car - it only gets occasional use.... started up every so often... moved around a bit... and the GSA is my daily modern.
It will be the other way round once I've got the pesky wheelbearing done on the BX. Just can't be bothered at the moment!
But seriously, even though I've spent shedloads on restoration costs, and when polished up it looks stunning... I still can't contemplate ever using the GSA just on sunny days/weekends. It loves being used. Roughly 47,000 miles since 2001 and still going strong (actually better than ever) at 156,500 miles. BTW it's dirty and hasn't had a wash since August.

Hey, that's true! I'd bloody love to be driving round in the new Insignia. Or an Astra VX-R or even better a Nurburgring. I'm even giving serious consideration to a brand new Vectra as there's a place selling them for about seven and half grand.
Anyhow the BX HAS been considered and discussed as a classic car before, as it rightly should have been. I'd still run one daily without any worry, as I've been doing in my Chevette recently.

I drive only about 170 miles a week in my recently acquired BX. I don't drive to work or take long jaunts because I don't have to. But I would take it to Scotland tomorrow if I had to. If it isn't working for it's keep it can't be justified here. In my opinion a BX is for living, not just owning.
And who can deny feeling just the tiniest bit smug when considering just how 'eco-friendly' and 'economical' we are being?
But, the seller (because they don't know cars apparently) wants shot. So I guess £80 gets you a non-taxed 1.6 petrol BX, with suspension issues: MOT or not, it's about right.
