Twin Choke Carb...

Post by Matt H »

Not off an AX, but would this fit? And if so, is it as good as the AX GT equivalent?

Would look for one off an AX, but there seems to be a shortage of GT carbs at the minute... :?

That's pretty much identical to an AX GT carb as far as I know. Certianly the 205 XS engine is in a very similar state of tune.

Also, having driven an 205XS in the past, it definitely goes a fair bit better than a standard BX14.

It's the same carb as an AX GT! Thats a direct fit, although get an overhaul kit before you fit it, cos if the needle's worn the second choke won't create much drama when you open it right it. I'd say half of the carbs around are like that now, due to the age of them. Overhaul is cheap thankfully, only a couple of quid.

I've got this AX GT head here, do you need it mate? Otherwise it's going on the bay of E along with pretty much everything in my garage

I can't be sure, but I would imagine at least the cam is different on the AX GT/205 XS (TU3S) engine to the one in your BX. So Kitch's head might be just what you need!

Especially given that your head gasket has failed, or have you replaced that yet? If you've still got to take the head off, makes sense to do the head swap then...

The 205 XS is definately a nippy little beast, although it struck me as a little low geared (hence the nippiness). I'm not sure how it compares to a BX14 in terms of gear ratios, but at 80 mph the engine would be doing about 4k rpm. If yours is higher geared than the XS then you will obviously lose a bit on performance, but I'm certain the swap would be worth it...go for it!

Yeah Mat, I actually believe it is the cam that differs, although I'm not 100% sure on that.

I've read the 205XS is rated at 80bhp, and the AX GT at 85bhp due to the cam. Also the red line on the GT comes in just before 7k revs IIRC where as I think the 205 was around 6.3k. I had a mate who had an XS and there really didn't seem to be much in it, perhaps the AX just being that tiny bit nippier due to it's weight advantage.

But....I've also seen reports saying they both had 85bhp, and that the engines are identical. The difference in "performance" was purely down to weight, and advertising; the XS was easier to insure than the GT and Peugeot didn't need another difficult hatch to get behind the wheel of....the GTi!

I know the AX GT has pretty short gearing, and I also remember the XS did. I'd bet they're actually both the same....cam, gearbox, carb etc. In fact back in my days my friend actually wound his 205XS up as high as it would go! Hit 6.3k revs, then a flat spot, then at 6.7k revs started pulling again to 7.5k!

Whether the cam differs to the BX's I'm not sure, it probably does but not by much. But it's an easy mod to switch the heads. The BX14 TU is very underrated performance-wise anyway, and isn't as far off a 16 as the figures suggest in my experience. With these AX bits, that gap would be practically zero!

Thanks for your input everyone...

The 14 is all fixed now, so swapping the head wouldn't really make much sense, but I'm still looking to do the carb. I actually chickened out of doing the Head myself

I still need to go and pick it up, but it passed it's MoT with no advisories which I was very pleased with 8)
