BX Stats Update
One for the mods i guess, anychance you could update the following on the site please? It would be interesting to have a historical database year on year showing how the numbers are decreasing. Cheers

Most are probably put off with a 1400 in a largish sized car i guess, but they forget how light they are so it should be reasonably nippy. How much power do they have? Must be more than a 1.9 n/a diesel?

The smallest engined versions of many cars are really something best avoided. I've never driven a 14 which seems to have a reasonable power to weight ration - and of course has its suspension optimised for its lower weight - so it should have a character of its own.
The other reason to be wary of small engined versions is that some manufacturers sell them as 'economy specials' and leave out most of the interesting toys.

I wouldn't say it's a large car really, only a little bit smaller than an Escort of the era. In fact it looked tiny next to a Fiesta mk6!
14's are pretty good aslong as you get the TU. The suitcase lump still goes ok (in all but base spec form) but sounds god-awful and can be tricky to work on! TU feels more eager and lively than the 16's, although if you recorded some figures I expect the 16 would come out on top.
At the end of the day, theres about 20bhp difference (in the real world) but the TU lump weighs less, and parts of the drivetrain also weigh less. I think the 14 tips in at 900kg or something like that. It's got a chirpy character, kinda raw like an n/a diesel. I don't make it any secret I like em, but nothings quite the same after a valver

I'd agree that from a width point of view the bx seems standard, length wise it does seem a reasonable size. But then again i've driven quite a few small cars, so perhaps thats just my perception.
Demag, i got that info off the bxclub website Not sure how it was procured though?

I reckon it's mediumish. Feels bigger than a Focus (although probably not by much) but not as big as a Mundano. I'm guessing that in its day it was considered to be in the Sierrra class? In which case it's quite a large car to have only a 1.4 engine.
Agreed, the TU is a nice little engine, I have a soft spot for them too. Maybe it's the subconsious link to my 205 owning girlfriend, who had several. Obviously a lady of good taste - except she ended up with me...

Sierras were available (for a short time) with a 1.3 engine.... Although they were of course available with a 2.8 V6 too, so maybe that's not a fair comparison.mat_fenwick wrote:I'm guessing that in its day it was considered to be in the Sierrra class? Having owned a Mk2 Cav of a similar vintage, the Cav seemed much much bigger than the BX. I seem to remember something about the BX being aimed sort of a "halfway" between the Astra and Cavalier size classes, and yet the Mk2 Astra also feels like a bigger car than the BX.
this might be a signature

It was compared mainly againt sierra/cavaliers, but as mentioned was more a big escort/astra size, but with the clever use of space its as roomy in my opinion except for the rear headroom possibly. Ive seen roadtests were it was pitched against a maestro or golf (where it won hands down), and was cheaper than both in 1.6 petrol form.
They do look small nowadays due to the comparative high roofline of modern euroboxes, I know my Mk5 golf is longer, wider and alot taller and not as easy to fit in the garage.

I think it's definitely to do with perception. I find it to be a smallish Escort sized car, whereas Lucy perceives it as a large car compared to the GSA, and therefore (even if it was auto) she feels she'd be a bit iffy driving it, especially as... well even I can't see the end of the sloping bonnet!DavidRutherford wrote:Largeish? Maybe my perception is a bit off, but I find the BX to be a fairly small car. Do other people find it smallish or largeish?MULLEY wrote: a largish sized car
I also have a soft spot for the TU engine in the BX14 - it definitely doesn't *feel* that much slower than a 16 and IMO makes some very rorty noises!
Having read a group test of 205s in Classic & Sportscar, I'm now attracted to the 205 XS ... and idly wondered what its tuned TU engine would be like in a BX...

We had a 205XS many years ago, it was an excellent small car, with the ride comfort to rival bigger machines and it was quite a fast car when driven hard.
The BX was a 'large family saloon' in the 80s, like a Cavalier MK2 or Sierra. It feels larger on the inside than both of those.
But in those days all cars were smaller, and the BX now looks quite small.
My 406, a 'modern' size large family saloon seems enormous in comparison, and is 40% heavier.
