Skip's 1989 BX TD

Post by Skip »

Hi all,

Newbie here - just thought I would say hi and pop a picture of my new steed up for all to see. Its a genuine one owner from new BX (TXD I think) with the 1.8TD engine - its been maintained by my father-in-law (himself an independant Citroen specialist in Norwich) from only about 6 months old for an older gentleman - its now covered 217,000 miles! Its immaculate inside and the only "issues" outside are rust at the bottom of the windscreen and in the door hinge area at the front.

For £230 with a years MOT and 6 months tax it was too good to pass up :)

Will add more details when I pick it up on Friday - I am really looking forward to it 8)

Nice in white, with the C pillar glazed. Excellent. Is that another BX behind it? 16v maybe?

Cheers guys - I hope it has many more miles left in it :) Looking forward to seeing how much MPG I can squeeze out of it!

Eagle eye! It is indeed a 16v - a 1990 on a G plate if memory serves. Its been parked up for a while now after it failed the MOT on rot at the back end due to a bodged accident repair some years ago. Father-in-law cant bring himself to scrap it as the rest of the car is sweet - no rust in the other usual places and only about 100k on the clock - he is just sitting on it for now as he cant decide what to do with it!

Whats the thing about the C pillar being glazed? :?

Welcome along Skip. Nice motor too! I'm sure someone around here could find a use for that 16v or most of it anyway!

You know, the smoked plastic panels on the rear pillars (OK 'glazing' might be the wrong word  :D )

Your welcome Skip, being the DTR Turbo it should have eleccy windows all round, eleccy sunroof, nice thick carpets, patterned seatbelts, rev counter and alots of other gizmos that the more "standard cars" dont have, it was the top of the range of the diesels in its time and rewrote the diesel rule back when launched back in 1988. Mr Rutherford owns a very simliar car.

And quite rare now too as the only made the DTR Turbo for about 18 months, the TZD Turbo which replaced it is more readily available.

Yup it has a rev counter and a sunroof - will have a good look round and post more pics this weekend.

Its being MOTd today - no reason it should fail at all - last year all it got was an advisory that one lamp was affecting another when braking.

Just out of interest what sort of MPG should I expect with mixed driving?

40mpg around town, 50+ on a run I expect and the magical 60 if you drive like a nun! So a good average should be about 45.

Or 36mpg if you boot it whenever possible :D

As Tim's said, i reckon low 40's is easily achievable with longer runs better, so pretty good for an old car....

Can that rot in the A pillar be sorted? or would it need replacing?

Mine returns a fairly consistent 44mpg (dropping into the 30s when crossing London) except when being driven by David, a man not known for his nun-like driving style.

When it manages 47mpg.
