Notchy reverse could also be due to incorrect idle adjustment

Idles just below 1000rpm.

Notchy reverse has nothing to do with idle adjustment. You should be able to select reverse with the clutch in and the engine at 3000rpm if you so choose...

What I was refering to is engaging reverse to quickly before the forward motion of the gearing has had time to reduce its speed. Something that I have picked up working with gearbox driven water pumps.

Have you checked the condition of the lever arm on top of the gear box - the one the clutch cable connects to? The one on my Series 2 gradually split about 18 months ago and in the latter stages was OKish when everything was cold, but once warmed up (clutch cable expanded??) I had to ram the clutch hard to the floor to change gear - and then with a crunch...

Photos are old one in situ and with new one for comparison. Citroen part No = 96 134 964.

Thats worth checking on all BXs Mark, never though of that, thanks.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....
