Blimey!! I remember those pioneer units. From 1978 -2000 my dad owned and ran a car audio/security business and for most of those years was a pioneer 'blue chip' dealer (that meant he was a preffered pioneer retailer or something) Anyway, those things were a marvel when they were new, really good at the time and astronomically expensive to buy and have fitted in the aftermarket.

I bet they would still fetch loads as a retro item.

I doubt it, they don't play those silver discs  Tbh, although retro hi-fi seems to be worth a few quid, car audio i think is a no, unless its something like Nakamichi :D

Nak's have always held their value pretty well, but some of the old Blaupunkt stuff, old Sony, Pioneer.. the well built expensive stuff still commands a price today. £500 for a set of Pioneer car separates is not unusual if they're in good condition, box etc etc...

That said, there's a lot of EXCELLENT sounding gear out there for literally a few quid if you're willing to look. A £5 big name cassette-based head unit will probably sound a lot better than a modern £100 one. Many have an AUX in that you can plug your iPod into, so you get the best of everything: sound, OE looks, and costs a fiver - a result in my book :)

I've been looking for something suitably period for the BX for a while, and I haven't found any Nakamich equipment that was less than £500.

Funny really as a working DR-3 tape deck is probably only worth £50 these days

This one was in a TVR 450SE I was in a few months back. I've been trying to find one like this for a while, but older top-end stuff rarely surfaces.

Haha...

Well, it was a TVR, in very hot weather, with very old coolant...

Need I say more?

Ah - plenty explanation!

Anyway - back on to stereos - I've just ordered a new CDless head unit on recommendation from Matt Smith, so I can check out some electronic tuneage in the BX. Fed up of CDs skipping.

I do have the original Blaupunkt unit that was fitted to the BX when I got it. I presume it wasn't working as I removed it - available for free of anyone wants that factory look.

£500 for an old head unit, must be barking imho, it'll probably break after a few months ownership, no spares in all likelyhood & then you've got to find someone who actually knows anything about how to fix it, nah thanks.

I nearly bought a nakamichi cassette head unit for my car a couple of years ago, but i reckon i was probably lucky not to get it as i would have been quite annoyed if it went wrong & the bill for getting it fixed would have been more than 3 times what it went for (thats even it was fixable of course). I'd personally just get the latest nakamich cd head units, at least they'd have a warranty etc....

The only Nakamichi's i've got at the mo is a BX150E which you can still get spares for & i've also got a rather nice OMS7EII which i bought on a whim hoping it's rarity would make its value rocket up......apologies for digressing from this thread.....

In my experience, Pioneer made excellent multidisk CD players.

Mine is 14 years old, and still works perfectly.

It was a lot of cash in its day, £250, but it is good.

There is some excellent quality stuff around that is well worth a listen for the price. I could put together a system from eBay for £100 that would sound better than a modern £500 one any day...

When I worked for a large chain if HiFi specialists back in the early 90's, I used to enjoy recording CDs onto a Nakamichi RX-505 we had in for a while - it smoothed out the recordings made from edgy, early CD players.

Oh, I used to love playing with my Nakas.....

No shame in it these days :D

Can anyone (else) remember what NAD stood for without Google/Wikipedia?

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Back on-topic... Mr R certainly does have a Digit, or at least he did the last time I spoke to him, but he seems to have gone to ground at the moment. It need restoration, but I think he could be persuaded to sell it to someone who promises to do it up.
