 Calm down. Nothing wrong with the tyres. Tyres are perfectly fine. As are Athenas...

I said: 'AFAIK' (read: as far as I've been told in the past). So I now know different - it seems.

BUT Why have 6" rims and not use them for a wider tyre: raison d'être and all...

Where did that info come from Kevan?

Phil, they are 165 because that's what Will had on the car before he bought the Speedlines.

I know these aren't an issue, 3 years fitting rubber rings is my knowledge base. But i've just googled and found this:

I'll also point out they've done 5k approx with no issues.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

You really wouldn't notice any difference between these and 5.5J GTi alloys. I hardly noticed any difference between these and the standard steelies on the old estate.

When I fitted these to mine with 195 tyres instead of the 165 originally fitted on my steels my car ride comfort was totally ruined, I had to take the 195's off and change them to the minimum 175 size to get a decent ride back. I have no doubt 195 will give better grip (not in snow though) but i prefer ride comfort to grip and my driving style will never hit the limits of adhesion of the 175 tyre.

The /\ links by Kevan are useful and the consensus of whats already been said that 165x70x14 - ARE under size for a 6J rim size which I would agree with too !

So just to add to the /\ links I've found a website (Which I book marked ages ago) where you put in the standard tyre size which vehicle starts off with (the tyres/rims that it left the factory on) then you put in the your new/changed tyre and rim sizes and then you can see what its predicted net affect it has on Speedo readings, ride height gain/loss etc. !

Heres the link for WILL THEY FIT.COM, have go to see the results

Note ! Remember to inform the insurers of any changes from the original tyre/rim sizes to a vehicle, as it may effect the premium or even jeopardize a 100% payout in the event of an claim (Say after an accident) so you have been warned !

Oh dear, did I open up a hornets nest? sorry!!!

I suppose much depends on individual driving style. If you drive gently, there shouldn't be a problem... but if you like corners, there could be.

My current TZD turbo on Speedlines with 185 tyres, is being retired in about 6 weeks time.
Unfortunately the tyres were getting too low, so as I have a set of steel wheels with 165 tyres and legal tread on them, I've fitted them.
What a difference.... it's too easy make the tyres squeal around corners!
