They are excellent so long as the autobox is not overfilled with fluid (or Dex 3).
It's reasonably sporty performance but smooth with it, Kickdown performance has 'balls' when you need to overtake quickly too. :D

This was my first auto BX after a few manual GTi and I'm pleased, Phil has bought several autos so he must be pleased too! 8)

What the venerable Mr 2go said. I had the GTi auto that Phil had owned and it went to Ian Fearn, then Doc (I think) and it was a bloody brilliant car. In fact the GTi was almost the perfect automatic.
Aren't we supposed to be promoting the BX, not slating models wrongly thought of as unwanted/unpopular?

Agreed. Sounds like it's Olympic blue too, but when the enthusiasts such as ourselves don't favour the cars generally, the majority will go unsaved.

A BX automatic is a marmite car, and that's just on this forum!

You could have had one! You might say you couldn't afford the insurance, but you'd have saved £300 or so buying one to go towards the insurance!

In fact for your overall figure, you probably could have had a valver :P

Fair point. You learnt, thats main thing.

Ive had about 6 auto bxs in total, and given a choice I would have an auto over a manual everytime, the ZF box is still smooth even by modern standards. Sadly the fact is older autos are perceived to be thirsty and expensive to fix if they go wrong in comparison, which Ive never experienced, the 19TRS auto I had with 150k miles on it was still very smooth.

I have extolled the virtues of the GTi auto as a really nice drive. Thirsty (as low as 20 mpg on a short urban cycle to 35 mpg on a long run) if compared with a diesel, but what you lose there is compensated for by the combination of performance (yes they can be hustled along quickly!) and relaxed, easy style... A compromise, yes, but the 8v engine combined with the ZF 'box works for me (and Way2go and Cavmad, Doc (I guess :) ) and others...). If only they'd done a 1.9TD auto!

Mine wasn't percieved. It was thirsty. Brand new Wbeer carb on the thing too.

By comparison I had a manual version of pretty much the same car, which did 42mpg to the national a couple of years back, and with me at the wheel! The auto would not better 25mpg at best, and was slower overall. Although I've said before, I'm sure the 19 is much better suited to the box. ITs just not my cuppa thats all, I prefer a proper gearbox.

I'm about 40 miles from Swansea, so if a collective Bafoonery Of BXCers need bits then I'm happy to collect them and post at cost or bring to Stratford (please add the odd £ to cover me fuel though   )
