How rare is the GTI 4x4

Post by Tourist »

I don't think I've ever seen a 4x4 BX, are they rare compared to the other models?

Rare but not unseen. They have a reputation for ferociously expensive exhausts and fragile running gear. There are some nice examples still around...

But I wouldn't be brave enough...

I've heard stories about the running gear being really unreliable too :? I suppose when they were new they were a good buy though.

Of the 320 odd examples sold in Britain I can't imagine there are many left now.

Must get mine MoT'd again...

They are rare, as mentioned most have been consigned to scrap because of the transfer Box going bang or an exhaust being NLA. Shame.

I drove an low milage one of these in good condition a few years ago.

I was rather dissapointed.

It had 125hp, but with the losses in the transmission and extra weight,
the extra grip was not really useful.

The 2wd GTI is more fun, cheaper to run, and far easier to fix.

The 4x4 is an interesting car, but it never really had a market place.

If you live in the stix it could be worthwhile.

i'd love to make a trip to a mudbath-year glastonbury in a 4x4 estate full to the brim with the band's gear and be one of the first to get out i reckon, put it through it's paces.

Citroen7 is obviously proud of his and so he should be. Keeps going on about the sound of that exhaust :D looking forward to hearing it. I'll do a recording and post!

You really have to hear it to believe it, tis stupid, and Citroen7's wont be slow once its sorted out.

Mike, i know what you mean they are a little lumbering on road, but if you ever get a chance to nail one through some little lanes and around boggy fields and very loose surfaces i'm sure you'll fall in love with them. I've had some great fun in a very battered 4x4 that needed the water topping up every half hour (buggered rad mind).

4x4 valver is the way to go though!

4x4 valver. Oft spoken about. Would it use the Pug 405 drivetrain?

I read this recently:
A 4x4 version called 405 MI16x4 was available early and built in sufficient numbers for homologation - however never was homologated. The 1.9 16v engine produces barely enough torque to cope well with the heavy and torque eating 4x4 system. Indeed, in road version the 405 MI16x4 takes 10.5s for the 0-100km/h sprint, while in performance the FWD MI16 was comparable to BMW M3 and Mercedes 190E 2.3-16.
By 1993 came a facelift for the 405 together with an appropriate engine capacity increase from 1905cc to 1997cc for the SRI and MI16 versions. Now as well a road version called 405 T16 was launched, featuring variable geometry turbo with overboost function, 4x4 with visco diffs alround and auto-variable suspension (Active suspension; Simply taken straight from the Citroen Xantia Activa). Even the dump valve assembly kit is standard in this car!

So a 16v Turbo 4x4 Activa BX? Wow.

where did you get that from Phil, its not exactly correct! For a start the Mi16x4 came out a LONG time before the Xantia and had a BX 16v rear beam and not an Activa one!
