Gunk, Jizer,or.....?

Post by mountainmanUK »

I've got a complete 17TD engine, plus a couple of gearboxes, which I am aiming to get nicely cleaned up. One of the gearboxes has had grass growing round (and presumably inside it!) for a couple of years! All are heavily greased, filthy, but otherwise (hopefully!) serviceable!

My question is: which degreaser do people prefer, to tackle this job?

Gunk, Jizer, or some other solvent / fluid?
(Note: I do not have access to a steam-cleaner, or high-pressure jetwasher)

Opinions guys please :D

Also, would the same degreaser be OK for cleaning INSIDE the gearbox, prior to being completely flushed out obviously! I suspect that there may be all kinds of crud lurking within!!

Cheers,

Dave

Gunk is pretty good, but, you really need to get your hands on a power jet wash - they are useful for many a job, just yesterday i cleaned the patio area with it - came up a treat

Asda smart price cola, a stiff brush followed by a hih pressure hose.

Soak overnight in Asda Smart Price cola, use stiff brush to loosen stubborn crap, wash off wiht high pressure hose - 20p for 2L of cola = cheap degreaser. I tend to use only that or petrol these days.

If you want to borrow my Karcher you can do with pleasure.

Love the idea of the 20p Asda "degreaser"!! :D Might just give it a go!

Thanks for the offer:) Whereabouts in the world are you?
(I'm in not-so-sunny Blackburn, in deep, dark, Lancashire:O)

Lancashire is great, though I would rather live up in Penrith and keep sheep and chickens, but there you go. Its just the Hole, where we have Toxic Terry, two murders in the last 2 years and of course the tardy....

Oh! Hi Marty:) Hadn't realised it was you.

If it's OK with you...could I borrow your wonderful liquid-squirting device next weekend please?;)
I've still got your mobile number, so I'll give you a tinkle later in the week (so long as you havn't changed it in the last 2 yrs!)

Wifey has been delegated to source a 6-pack of El Cheapo Asda Cola, in preparation for the aforementioned pop-blasting event.

Cheers!
Dave :D

(Myself, I would love to be living on a croft on the misty, but magical, Isle of Skye, tending for a handful of sheep and chickens. Penrith, and the Cross Fell, Mickle Fell area is similarly bleak, but not as magical.....but both better than the Hole or Blackburn!)

Aye, give us a shout during the week and pick it up whenever - I think i have had the same phone number now for about 10 years, so no its not changed.
Dont mind the fact its splatterd with bittumin - that all stems from the Face of Christ tar spill many years ago when I had my baptism of fire with Vera.

4 months what a joke - I saw him on Sunday drinking petrol in the village from out of a jerry can
