Occasionally constrained by geography. When not driving, can rely on ferry, two wheels and musclepower when a couple of miles as the crow flies would become a round-road-trip ten times the distance.

Never seen an M plate TXD before, I thought they were all TZD's by then?

I'm oddly drawn to that.
Too much money though.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Nah, all estates carried on until the X*** estate came along I've seen a few late 19TXDs and even 16is I think): I've certainly seen them on L's and the odd M - including one late TXD estate where every panel had been hand-painted black and the interior replaced with a very worn red/grey herringbone one.

Also, who knows how long some of the older cars sat around in showrooms before being bought ? Now, if that were a French car it might well have had the 6+2 pump - only on very late 19 diesels according to the French book of lies.

The 5 Cylinder Pump.

The 5 cylinder hydraulic pump came into common use in 1982 on the Citroen CX, and then was used throughout the BX range and most of the XM range. Failure is normally, external leakage, noisy operation and on the BX and XM heavy steering, especially when the engine is cold

Xantia Pump.

The early Citroen Xantia used a 6 cylinder pump (2 pipe pump) later models used a 6 + 2 cylinder pump (3 pipe pump) The early 2 pipe pump was used with a flow distributor valve for the steering and had much the same hydraulic system as the BX. These early Xantia’s did not have the anti sink system.

The later 3 pipe pump was used when the Xantia was fitted with the anti sink system, in this system the flow distributor valve was removed and the steering was powered direct from the 6 piston part of the pump, leaving the 2 piston part to provide pressure for the suspension and brakes. This pump was used on the later Citroen XM with the anti sink system. Failure of these types of pump is normally indicated by, external leakage, noisy operation and heavy power steering, especially when the engine is cold.

A fountain of knowledge way2go :D So, without going into too much detail (only saving you the trouble of writing an essay, unless you want to of course  ) whats the advantage of the 6+2 over the 5? Is it just reliability or does it just work slightly better?

Bloody 'ell Mulley, I highlighted that for you in red in the previous answer!

You have an extra pipe to feed the steering directly and can dispense with the FDV which amongst the other technicalities has to be a major advantage.

Aha, excuse my ignorance. I guess its one less component in the system, so should be more reliable, cheers :D

I dont know about more reliable, but it is a better engineering solution than using the 5 piston pump and splitting the fluid for the PAS through the FDV.
That always seemed like a bodge to me.
