Graphite Speedlines (6J) for sale

Post by Philip Chidlow »

Five of these are fully round, the other two have very slight rim mis-shaping although they may still balance out. All the polished rims are in need of refurbishment to a greater or lesser degree where the lacquer has peeled/bubbled and the alloy has oxidised beneath. Not a major problem but something I can't find the time or inclination to do. Having them professionally refurbished (the best four) would cost about £140. Still not bad for a beautiful set of alloys but with BXagon and other commitments I can't justify it. Wife wants the shed space back too!

The grey paint is generally very good and all the centre caps are there. There are 16 bolts too as well as a genuine 16v spare with good tyre.

So, change of plan - I need to sell them. Going on eBay tomorrow. Anyone interested would need to collect form Chelmsford, Essex within a couple of weeks.

How much? £85 ono.

Ive just had some new 175s fitted.

Will these sit well on 6Js.If so and Tourist doesnt want them,I would be
interested. My only constraint at the moment is time and distance. I will see if he posts later on to say yea or nay!

I'm waiting on Rutherford for his address so I can decide to go for these or his, don't hold them for me Phil I'm sure some more will come along. If you still have them in a few weeks I'll probably take 'em though.

David Rutherford lives in Dorset I believe so logistically, getting to there from Oxfordshire is probably better than going to Phillips in the land of the blonde ( Essex )

I think you're right Susan, thank you. Dorset appears to be further but an easier route. Let me know when you're free David and we can try and arrange something; you have some pm's stacked up in your inbox. Sorry but I am excited :)

Richard, i wouldnt personally fit 175's on a 6j, might possibly get away with 5.5j's, but even that may be pushing it. A tyre fitter should be able to advise on this. I've fitted 185's onto 5.5 & 6j's with sucess.

Cheers Mulley,thats settled that then.

Although Ive run BXs for about 10 yrs Im still not au fait with the minutae,so to speak.I"ll bow to your judgement on this.

Whats the chances of finding some 5.5Js? Im going to put these on my
estate, and I dont want to make the wheels look too fat for it,if you see
what I mean

Personally I would think twice. 175's on steels (originally intended for 165's) are, in my experience a happier 'mismatch' (if you get what I mean) than 175's on a rim intended for 185's. You can get a 195 on those 5.5J's but that isn't such a successful choice I understand. The only reason to fit alloys to a BX would be to enhance the looks as they arguably seem to make very little difference to the dynamics of the car. If you fit 195's on suitably-sized steels on a 16v will there be a difference over the SpeedlinesI wonder?

As yours is an estate why not spend the money you would on alloys on a full set of TZD/Meteor/Leader trims - very 'in keeping'.

Part of the reason I'm selling the Speedlines here (which were acquired with effort and expense!) is that I don't actually care anymore what the wheels look like on my GTi. The tyres are important - I've got Michelins, and the condition of the egine - good - and the suspension (recently overhauled) and the general state of the interior/exterior are far more important to me these days as it's a daily driver.

It's you choice and whatever you do, I know your BX will appreciate the indulgence! 8) :D :D
