BX 19TGD Auto

Post by Tim Leech »

Sen to me via the CCC website link.

I have just bought a C5 and so my BX TGD Auto hatchback is available. Because of its age it would normally be a candidate for crushing, but I feel it would be a pity despite its age if that was to happen.

It is a 1992 (originally on a J plate) BX TGD Auto hatchback in dark grey with sunroof. 142,000 miles with full service history. Serviced firstly by the main dealer, and then for the past several years by Paris Autos of Stockport a specialist Citroen workshop par excellence. As far as I am aware the car is in perfect mechanical working order, even the electric windows work. The MOT expires this Friday, but because it has a personalised number plate I will have to keep it for a little while longer, I think, because I don't yet have the "log book" for the C5.

The vehicle was in a side-impact accident a few years ago, and because of a poor repair at the Main Agents the near side is now showing signs of rust damage. The two front wheel arches have been welded to meet a previous MOT standard, and the boot lid lock does not work after using a rope to tie down the lid when carrying carpet!!!! There is a tow bracket, but the car has hardly been used for towing.

The car could really do with two new front seats tho' they will survive a little longer. There is a Blaupunkt radio. The sunroof leaks, but this is because the drainage channels need cleaning. The bumper on the off-side corner is damaged.

I suspect that it would need a full service to pass an MOT because it is dropping LHM in small amounts. (It is some time since I topped up the LHM, and the suspension rises properly.)

Again, the reason for my concern is that I have only seen one other Auto BX in seventeen years, here in Royton. It's a real rarity and I suspect that with a bit of loving kindness, and a garage to provide cover against the tree debris which clogs the sunroof drainage, that it could go on into the mid 200,000 miles.

Because of the problems transferring the number plate before the MOT expires, I think I would consider getting rid without transferring the number, and losing it.

The car is in oldham and he is asking £200 ono, but is negotiable.

Brutally frank time: To want any money is pushing it, without an MOT and with the issues he describes with the body repair etc. If someone really wants a diesel auto BX and is willing to put the money/effort into the car then it might be worth it so long as it was virtually free.

IMHO Better off buying a ZX diesel auto - those are fetching BX money now!?

By the time I got my TGS home it had cost me £80, again with no MOT and as it turns out a few issues, ive since had to spend about £400 on it and its still not exactly how I want it...£200 is way over the top.

I'd disagree. Scrap's creeping up (and down) and a few bits removed and the weigh in will see about £150-£200 I reckon.
We really need to be promoting BXs not encouraing people to think 'stuff it, it's easier to have s crap man collect it'.
I'd humbly suggest an e-mail or whatever being sent to the seller and suggesting perhaps £100 would be a fairer amount?

Food for thought, Billy. Since when did head rule heart - or rather when did financial sense triumph over enthusiasm - as far as taking on an old BX? I still think there're are enough around in decent order to keep prices of BXs that need a fair amount of work to start with, down unfortunately. Time will come though when any BX will be eagerly sought out.

I see your point Phil but an auto BX must be pretty rare now and being a diesel will be relatively sought after.
The seller has stated they would rather not have it crushed so a) clearly knows the options available and b) must want someone to take the car on, which can only be a good thing and hopefully implies there's room for margin on the price.
Don't forget lots of people over price things for various reasons, not least because it would be a great deal less hassle to scrap it than wait round for someone to come and look at it then probably not show up or mess them about anyway.
I just think it's not worth dismissing this car out of hand because of the price, it should be worth suggesting contacting the vendor and seeing if a deal at a better price can be struck.
Quite often sympatheic owners are happy to take a fair chunk less for a genuine buyer and I still maintain we should be trying to save BXs. Dead right we can't save them all but we should encourage people to try and take them on and get them on the road rather than just dismissing one as too expensive without trying to sort a deal out with the owner.
Who knows, a potential buyer may have read this thread and taken it as the car is not worth bothering with/too expensive without trying to contact owner.

I reckon to do as you mentioned is the best approach. Try to get him to consider £100 (but we all know he might be offered less). It has to be said if there were pictures and it was a looker he might not have to!

From the conversations I had, he seems very fond of the old girl, and is a member of the CCC, I think finding a good home is more important than the cash so if anyones interested then get in touch and make an offer, he can only say no.
